L&D Scare (long)

Well, we had an exciting day yesterday!!

When I woke up in the morning I had slightly brownish discharge (like you might see at the verrrrry tail end of your period). I wasn't feeling any contractions so wasn't worried, but the same thing happened last Saturday, so I called my OB to see if I should be worried.

She called back at 9:15 and told me to come in and get checked. I was in a prep meeting with a client and co-counsel for a meeting with the government that was supposed to be at 1. I asked if I could come in at 3:30 after the meeting or if I should drop everything and rush in, and she said it would be better to come in earlier. I told my boss what was going on and she said it was no problem to leave. To all the other people (all men...), it def looked like I showed up and left 15 min later for no reason whatsoever...so embarrassing!

DH met me at the doctors office where we were both freaking out. The doctor did a cervical check and said I was 1 cm dilated, which can happen now (I'm 31w5d) but she said its a little unusual for a FTM. She had me do heartbeat and contraction monitoring for about 20-25 min, and saw what she said were 3 or 4 "mini contractions" at the end 2-3 min apart. I couldn't feel them at all, and really thought one of them coincided with the baby rolling over right against the contraction monitor. But she gave me a steroid shot just in case and send us to the hospital to be monitored. Baby boy's heart rate looked strong and perfect the whole time.

The hospital hooked me back up to the monitor for another half hour and their doctor did another speculum exam and cervical check. She said everything looked visually closed, and thought I was less than 1/2 cm dilated. They also saw no contractions the entire time I was there. The doctor brought her attending in for yet another cervical exam because she saw something on my cervix and wanted him to look, so I got a third speculum exam - yay! They were confident that it's a cyst that I don't need to worry about at all, but thought it could have caused the slight bleeding. They also did an ultrasound and the baby still looks great, and the amniotic fluid levels looked perfect. He was just sucking his thumb and chilling out in there!

They think everything is ok for now, and that the contractions might have been caused by dehydration and stress (I've been working 90 hrs per week for the last 2 months, so definitely stressed! And both of the mornings I had the brown discharge happened after a night that I was up working until midnight and back up working at 5.). I'm glad everything seems ok, but am freaked out that there's no real explanation other than a guess. My boss on this matter is the best and insisted I take the rest of the week off, so I'm just relaxing for now!

At least we got a little trial L&D run in, and DH was so, so great the whole time. I was fine whenever he was there, and during the only part where he had to leave for 10 min to touch base with work I started sobbing. So basically he can't ever leave me during labor! Glad out little guy is ok and staying put, though I'd much rather have continued with our perfect uneventful pregnancy!!

Re: L&D Scare (long)

  • So glad everything's okay! I had almost the same thing happen to me when I was 32 week pregnant with my boys. I had a tiny bit of bleeding and went to L&D expecting to be sent away and ending up staying the night, getting a steroid shot, and I was 1 cm dialated. I made it another 4 weeks (with twins and they broke their water). Sorry you had to get so many cervical checks! Yeesh! I was 1cm dialated rest of my pregnancy and never progressed. Glad baby's cooking away!

  • So glad to hear you and baby are okay! Enjoy the rest of your week off... Geesh, it sounds like you need a break. Working 90+ hours a week is nuts! I'm a nurse and only work 36, and that is tiring enough!
  • Wonderful to hear all is well! I had almost the same thing happen last Thursday. I was spotting and having a lot of pressure. However, I am not dialated but baby is head down and likes to punch! Lol. I have not had contractions that I know of since my IV due to dehydration. You are in my thoughts. Just rest and relax the rest of the week.
  • Glad all is well!
  • Thanks, all! I'm glad it was just a false alarm. I'm definitely going to slow it down at work until D-Day!!
  • Glad everything is fine!
