Baby movement.. Need help

I'm a FTM and I have consistently felt my baby move and never counted the kicks because I was never worried. For the past 4 or 5 days I barely feel her, but I have felt her at certain moments but very faint movements. The only reason I am wondering if I should be concerned is because she is moving way less than before and not as hard or consistently. But I sometimes do feel her randomly just it's so light compared to before... What do you ladies think?

My advice? Do a kick count. Eat something or drink some juice, then lay down for either 1 hour or until you count 10 movements (hiccups don't count). 10 movements in one hour is the "norm." Keep in mind that baby does sleep in the womb, so there are sometimes you'll have less movement than normal. I know my baby is SUPER active at night (lucky me!) so when I wake up to pee or to tend to my 2 year old, she's always moving.
  • Drink a cold sugary drink such as juice and lay on your side.
  • I've had the same thing happen to me. My son was very active but for a few days I would see him move but I wouldn't feel it and it was at random times. He was just positioned in a weird spot. I called my dr and they checked him. It's better to be safe than sorry!
  • I agree with calling your doctor, it would give you piece of mind. They may have you do a kick count as well, they will be able to give you the best advice.

I wish people would stop saying ten kicks an hour is normal that's quite inaccurate. I was told by my midwife and doctor that babies in the womb sleep for about 16 hours a day on and off. So you may not feel kicks for an hour or even a few hours that doesn't mean anything is wrong. Though I would say babies tend to have a routine so if you notice a big difference in this routine call your doctor especially if it's been more then a day. I'm sure you baby is fine but it's better to call just to be on the safe side. Do update us either way :)>-

So just because YOUR midwife says that means this advice is "inaccurate"? This is now my 3rd pregnancy and this has always been the recommendation. So, yes, when I do kick counts that's what I'm looking for generally. Babies do sleep a lot at this point but 10 kicks an hour, at THIS point in pregnancy, is pretty common across the board. *side eye*

OP, I agree with @Wering . If you drink something sweet and you don't feel 10 kicks in an hour call your doctor. He/she can give you further advice.

  • Definitely consult with your doctor; however, I felt the same way a few weeks ago but felt that since I was still feeling movements, just not as strongly, I didn't worry about them. Last week at my checkup, my fundus measurement was up 2cm. Could mean nothing or could've meant baby had a little growth spurt which explains the quieted movements. He's been moving a lot more since then but still has quiet days here and there. At any rate, still call your doctor if you are worried.
  • Thank you ladies for your comments! I usually feel her when I'm laying down, like when I'm going to bed or in the morning. So I am going to lay down for an hour tonight after drinking something and try to at least count 6-8 kicks and if I can't get that, I'll call my doctor in the morning! I'll let you ladies know how it goes!

I hope everything turns out to be just fine!

  • Not a bad idea to call your doctor, but I have had days here and there when movement was lower than usual. I think when we get used to movement, we don't notice it as much.
  • My doc said to count when she is most active each day. Goal is to reach 10 kicks in 1 to 2 hours. Just once a day, not 10 kicks every hour! We've all got to sleep sometime! I try not to overthink it, but would definitely call in if I didn't feel movement all day at this point.

I'd definitely call, but kick count norm with my ob is 10 in a two hour timetable. My LO has super active days and more subtle days. That's the patten, so a quiet day here and there doesn't bother me. On quiet days, laying down and tuning in does the trick. GL!
  • Does the "kick" count include rolls and other movements?
