Doctor said I'm not pregnant after 7 positive tests

Hi all,

Had my first appointment today (im about 5 weeks) as I've been spotting over weekend. To cut a long story short Dr did urine pregnancy test and he said it was negative (there was a faint line but he said it had to be stronger) I came right home and did two more tests and they both came back positive (not even faint)!? I am completely confused...

He actually didn't seem to believe me (I will attach a photo of all my positives lined up!)

My bloods have been sent off so I should get conclusive results on Wednesday but I'm feeling so sad and disappointed- my period is 10 days late so if I'm not pregnant i don't know where it is?! Has anyone else had anything like this happen?

X

  • Eurgh thank you so much! It's an unexpected and my first pregnancy so I was really hoping for some reassurance from Dr and left feeling awful!

I'm just a bit worried that as I have been spotting/bleeding lightly on/off I could be having an early miscarriage? :(
  • Don't freak out just yet. Spotting is also normal, as long as it's not accompanied by cramping and doesn't fill a pad.

  • I've heard of doctors not trusting pee stick tests, especially when we at home tend to buy tests that are more sensitive than theirs. It does not endear me to them at all. At this point, I think you're pregnant. Just keep drinking water and be easy on yourself. Follow what @bookqueen said about gauging your spotting as many women spot in their pregnancy. And keep testing of you like it, or don't. Hopefully you'll get your blood work back and shut your doctor up.

Yeah I would probably find a new dr at this point. Try not to stress too much while waiting on your blood test.

  • Agreed with PPs. I'm so sorry your doctor is making you worry. It sounds like you're pregnant!

  • Agree with PPs. Get a new doc and be kind to yourself in the meantime. Sorry you're going through this!

  • Some at home pregnancy tests are also more sensitive than the strips the doctors use. Congrats on your BFP. Your doctor kind of sounds like an a--hat, FWIW. Urine pregnancy tests are qualitative, not quantitative, so any indication of a line shows hCG is present.
  • With DS, I had this happen.  I had many positive HPTs and then the urine test at the doctor was negative.  He had me go do blood work and I was soooo relieved when my HCG level's came back good.  It was our first as well and we were so scared but he's a happy and healthy 5 year old now! :)  Based on those pics, you are pregnant.  Take a deep breath and wait for the blood test results!

  • I'm brand-new to this board - but I would say 2 things are possible - his test is a different sensitivity as PP's have said, in which case the betas should be good.
It is also possible that it could be a chemical pregnancy.  I had one of those a few months ago.  Tests were positive a few days before expected AF (I was temping to confirm O), then starting spotting for a few days within the next week, then heavier bleeding and the tests were negative.
I really hope for your sake it is the former!  Good luck!

  • Thank you all so much for the reassurances and kind words xx I'm gonna try and pester for results tomorrow, will update when I find out!
  • I'd say it's good if you can get a + test. When I had my early MC my spotting went from light to heavy period in a matter of 6-8 hours or so. I went to the ER and the #'s were so low the test didn't turn up positive. the doctor told me I was never pregnant and I must have read the test wrong. I demanded blood work and he kept the same story. I took the paperwork from the visit to the OB and while I was in fact no longer pregnant they said the numbers showed that I had in fact been pregnant. I was pissed and made sure I wasn't required to pay for that dicks treatment. My point is that not all doctors are good. and I would get a second opinion. If you're still POAS and getting + I'd get a second opinion.

  • Thanks for your comment and sorry for your loss x That must have been really difficult to be told you weren't pregnant- some things you just know!

I'm from UK and have a surgery rather than a Doctor so I'm unlikely to see the same person again (I'm pretty sure he was a locum...). If I have to argue that I was pregnant I have a bag full of positive tests to take with me!

I've spotted lightly on and off since Friday it (touch wood) seems to be tapering off but feeling very scared at the moment :(
  • The best thing you can do is relax!

  • I would find a new doctor. With all 3 of my pregnancies my ob relied on my at home tests he says they are more accurate then his and considered my pregnant and just confirmed with a blood test which was always also positive. That doctor you saw sounds like a jerk
  • Congrats Bohemama22!!! I'm so happy for you!!!!! i would still be looking for a different doctor!

  • Thanks so much :)

It was a locum doc I saw yesterday- thankfully the doctor I am registered to seems wonderful he even rang me at 8.45am to give me the results and said I don't know why the dr yesterday didn't think you were pregnant! He is also sorting this early scan out for me to see how everything's doing- I'm not expecting that I will see much just before 5 weeks though.

Fingers crossed for everyone's sticky babies xx

I had lots of spotting in the first trimester with DS, most of it before I even knew I was pregnant (I found out at 6.5 weeks along), but some even after I found out.  As long as you aren't seeing clots and it comes and goes, you're probably ok.  (I have had a m/c in the past and can say that when I miscarried, the bleeding continuously got worse until the bigger clotting happened and then it was over.  So I would say the tapering-off is a good sign!)
  • Congratulations on your doctor's original decision being wrong!  Good luck in your search for a new OB!
  • Doesn't everyone (at least a fricken DOCTOR) know that even a faint line is still a line? His test was positive too, but he didn't know how to read it! I swore off male Gynos for a similarly stupid one. He made a mistake a woman would never make.

  • (Just lurking, but your title caught my eye.)

    Congrats!

It sucks that that locum doctor put you through a stressful day, but it sounds as if the other one at least knows what he/she's talking about. Hope you have a happy and healthy nine months!

Agree with PP.  That's a lot of clearly positive results to be told you are not pregnant.  I'd wait to hear from the blood work but they shouldn't make you feel bad or act like they don't trust you.  You need to be with an OB you like and can trust all the way through pregnancy so I'd switch now.

Spotting is very common during pregnancy. If it becomes heavy bleeding such that you can fill a pad in less than an hour, then call your doc. Otherwise just try to take it easy and drink plenty of water.

    @Bohemama22 That's really aggravating! Congrats though! :)

Just a head's up, it's against TB'S policies to post pictures of used pregnancy tests. Some people get a little snarky. Thought I'd forewarn you!

  • I have always known that "a line is a line", no matter how faint...it still counts. My strips at home were very light and I suppose my OBs also were, but I am still positive. I think you should look into getting a new OB.

  • @moomee thanks for letting me know x I had no idea that pregnancy tests were not allowed but I've deleted the photo's now!

Crikey I think I'm going to have to stay very quiet until I learn forum etiquette :'D

  • Congrats on your pregnancy and Im glad you have another Dr. I work at a Drs office and when we do a HCG urine test "a Line is a Line is a Line". End of story. I always tell people that our test is no better than an at home test so if you want to be 100% lets do a serum HCG. Im sorry for your scare!
