salad help! (and confession!)

I have no issues eating salads, but my issue is that I do not feel full no matter how big my salad is. I usually put spinach, crumble up some deli cheese, deli turkey (that I warm up), and grape tomatoes. What am I doing wrong??

Confession: I just ordered myself TWO treats at Dairy Queen! First time but I couldn't decide, so small blizzard and small Orange Julius for me and baby! lol

  • Maybe your body wants more solid food like protien and carbs. Nothing made me more happy that the turkey meatloaf & mac n cheese DH made for dinner!

Try adding nuts or meats for protein, and maybe a piece of bread on the side? I know I personally never feel full without carbs (but I usually need much less than I think)...
  • ah! I'll try a slice of bread! Thanks for the idea! I try to eat healthy but need to get full, too! I wonder if I could add anything else to it with protein...I'll have to google some ideas. (:
  • Half your diet should be carbs (a lot of which can be beans and veggies) but carbs are definitely not the enemy! Maybe add some beans to your salad and I agree with the other suggestions.

What about putting the salad in a wrap? I love doing a wrap with hummus then add the salad on top!

The hummus is nice too bc if you make this every day it can get kinda boring but change the flavor hummus and it's new again! Also, I love crasins in my salad, doesn't add much appetite wise but adds some texture and flavor :)

  • do you ladies buy the cold grilled chicken? if so, what brand?
  • I love to add strawberries or blueberries, walnuts, almonds, cubed cheese, chicken (I like to marinade a bunch in italian dressing then bake until done. Chop it up and store it in a bag) and craisins in my salads! I pack everything separately then mix it all together at lunch time!

  • oh Yum!! I am def trying the chicken thing!
  • Roast some slivered almonds and pumpkin seeds.
  • If you like your salad as is, just add protein as a side! I'm diabetic, so I have to keep carbs low and protein high. Add cottage cheese with fruit, Greek yogurt, cheese cubes and fruit, a few peanut butter crackers, a small bean salad, etc. You can also do grilled chicken, beans, seeds (pumpkin or sunflower kernels), or hard-boiled eggs on the salad.

  • Beans and chicken in the salad! I love garbanzo
  • Kidney beans, taco meat, hard boiled eggs, chick peas, nuts.... Or eats some peanut butter crackers or hummus and veggies, or fruit and peanut butter with ur salad
  • In order to feel full you need some healthy fats in your salad... Nuts are a great addition, almonds, sunflower seeds, and soy nuts are my faves! Choose a low fat dressing not far free, but make sure it is made with healthy ingredients such as olive oil, or simply make your own dressing with olive oil and some balsamic or apple cider vinegar. Avacado is also fantastic for filling you up and tastes beyond amazing in salads! Hope this helps!
  • oh yum! what kind of beans?
I love putting black beans in my salad... Actually - Black beans, corn, feta cheese (pasteurized milk - obvi) avocado, cherry tomatoes and a little lime juice with EVOO makes a nice santa fe type salad... also add chicken for protein.

  • I make a big batch of quinoa on sunday and add some to my lunch salads. Good source of nutrients and it helps with feeling full. I also put lentils sometimes since they are high in protein and i like them.
  • I usually love boiled eggs on a salad. And I eat it with pita bread :)
  • Don't forget the hard boiled eggs!!! They are notorious for keeping you fuller longer and are a great source of protein.
  • I always add a boiled egg and some cous cous - really filling! Can't beat some Cajun chicken spice either!
This Lebanese chicken and lentil salad is amazing! Give it a try and the dressing is so tasty using yoghurt, mint and lime!

  • Hmmm I make my salads with cold boiled potatoes and eggs, plus sometimes some chickpeas and walnuts and I marinate and grill chicken breasts. Delicious. Try using avocado and stuff too. Nice and rich and filling!
  • Even when I'm not pregnant I usually need more than a salad. I don't know why. The ladies above gave you some great ideas though. :-)

Also, I'm now planning on going to DQ later. Thanks. ;-)
  • I'd add chickpeas, cashews, and fruit (just because I like fruit. I don't think it will fill you up more, but the chickpeas and nuts will.) Also I think the side of bread or breadstick would help.
  • Ooo and avocado!
