To reuse or not reuse?

Before I ask my question would just like to say that I already searched to see if anyone has discussed this prior and nothing came up.
This is baby #2 for me. I was given a breast pump (medela) through insurance with baby#1. I was only able to use it for 3 months. Is it sanitary/ok to use this same pump for baby#2? I'm wondering bc ever since baby#1 my insurance changed and not sure if it will be covered with new ins. Plus, if it's not covered I would hate to buy brand new if I will only be using it 3 months again. I guess at this point I am trying to figure out what I need to buy new and what to reuse. Should I just replace some parts?

Re: To reuse or not reuse?

  • The pump itself should definitely still be good. I would replace any parts you can't boil to sanitize, usually that is just the tubing.

@amm0512 Thank you!! As I was leaving the comment it made sense to me about replacing parts but needed someone to clarify. :)
  • @kimia222 you can get a new one from insurance if you prefer. Sometimes the motors get tired. My friend is having her 2nd and called yesterday and they said no problem and sent her a new medela.
  • The base should still be fine. If insurance won't give you another one and you need or want replacment parts you can buy them on Amazon for a decent price. Most brands sell bundles that include all parts - valves, tubing etc. - My personal preference since it eliminates the need to run around if something needs replacing. : )

Exactly this. I've decided if this baby doesn't latch like DS didn't I'm not going to pump - it was the worst thing ever for me.
  • My SIL is giving me hers, we're just replacing a few parts. Should be good as new! :)
  • My sister has a really expensive one and a cheaper one, she only used it for a few months tops, so I'm going to just get all new parts for it, not sure if my insurance covers it but I'm probably going to try to do both so I have the ability to have more than one
  • Laws have changed so even if your insurance changed you very well could still be covered. I'd definitely look into it. Some posted yesterday about which pump is best and there is a link someone posted to a website where you can enter in your insurance info and they'll automatically tell you if you qualify and which pumps are covered. Definitely check it out! If they don't cover it, then I'd go by what all these smart PPs have posted ;)
  • The breast pump I used for my first 2 was given to me by my sister-in-law. She used it for all 3 of her kids. I just replaced a few minor parts. It's worked fine for me! However, with my other kids I never heard of insurance covering pumps, so I'm definitely getting a brand new one this time around. I think it's time after the other one going through 5 children too!
  • Wow, thank you ladies!

Thanks for that info! Good to know about the website, I will search some more for that link.
