SSRI, Anyone?

Just curious if anyone else is taking Zoloft? Or similar SSRI? I've recently been suggested this as I have a very long history of depression and anxiety. Doctors feel this makes me more predisposed to postpartum depression...

They would start me at 25mg and increase doses weekly up to approx 200mg as they feel would be a therapeutic dose for my particular circumstances.

They are reassuring me that baby is now fully developed and won't be harmed by the medication. (25w 1d)

Does anyone have personal experience with this or another SSRI? Was baby effected by it all? Did it help your mood? Any major side effects?

Thank you.

Re: SSRI, Anyone?

  • My partner was on then for a while and did not have a good experience. His mood was worse, he couldn't eat or sleep and was suicidal. Everyone's different but that was his experience

  • @chelsea+summer Wow, I am sorry to hear that! I have been on many antidepressants and have never experienced any of those side effects!

Just curious about their use in pregnancy. Thanks :)
  • I'm on Zoloft 50 mg, have been the whole pregnancy it's worked really well for me. They prefer you to not be on it in the third trimester, I'm not sure why or if that's just for me? Lol but I definetly recommend it if you're needing something! Hope this helps and is a little reassuring! :)
  • My OB just recommended I go on Zoloft as well. I'm 25w1d. She said that if I can't wean off at 36 weeks, as she recommended, it would be ok. She said that it makes some babies tired at birth. My anxiety has been through the roof and is getting worse. It's a hard decision but I believe it's the right choice right now. Good luck with everything! :)

@GoodyCobb they recommend you reduce your dosage in the last tri, so the baby isn't born addicted to the drug. :-)
  • How about while breastfeeding? I want to go back on Zoloft after but worried taking while breastfeeding

  • I was on an SSRI for about two years *not while pregnant* for OCD. It did really help me to control my fear thoughts and not feed into them. It was coupled with therapy, which I would not recommend doing an SSRI without- it's just a bandaid then and not really helping to change a pattern of thinking. Another thing to bear in mind; what's 'worse' for baby- stress or a bit of synthetic serotonin? That being said, I am not on anything and have been using some really intense self control. It's really hard, and I would love to get on an SSRI, especially if it's safe for baby- but SSRIs can be dangerous if you don't wean properly- and as I mentioned before, they are best if you can manage to attempt to change patterns in thinking and anxiety anyway- that's the only way to break down those pathways that make your mind go places you would rather it not. Anyway, I definitely feel you ladies on anxiety- OCD has really threatened to destroy my pregnancy joy but I refuse to let it. Good luck, and know that if you need the extra help of an SSRI there's no shame, they are truly helpful for many. If you want to talk about it, or get any "tips" on redirecting anxious thoughts feel free to pm me- I've spent about 4 years un medicated for OCD now thanks to a few tools.
  • I was on mine, Celexa, for years and I didn't stop taking it right away when I found off but weaned off completely by like 19 weeks I think. I sort of wish I talked to my docs about staying on at least a low dose and just stopping closing to the end of pregnancy like they advise because it has not been easy for me. Physically I'm doing well but emotionally this pregnancy has been rough. I'm going through very stressful times at work, in life, and over past year we were building a house with a builder that was a crook. It has been horrible we have had to get lawyers involved and almost came to the point of suing and we have thousands invested. We are finally closing next week and we still need to do w few things to the house as we just want the builder out of our lives. I have noticed that dealing with stress is very different than when I was on my Celexa. I've always been high strung and anxious, but now it is over the top. I sob my eyes out, get very depressed, my heart races my hands shakes. On top of it there's practically no outlet to relieve stress while pregnant other than yoga or massage. It's not like I can throw back a few glasses of wine or pop a Xanax on a night when the anxiety is really bad. If we decide to have a second I would make the decision to stay on a lower Dose of my meds as the health of the mom is important too.
I think that the docs might be starting you know because it's considered a safer period since everything is developed but they will probably have you wean off by 36-37 weeks or so before delivery.
  • I take Celexa and they haven't recommended me going off them at all during my pregnancy. Both my OB and my psychiatrist feel it is better to be on them then not.

  • Thanks for putting this topic up, I'm in a bit of a different situation. It looks like my relationship with the baby's father is falling apart and I'm desperately trying to get my life in order (ie. Have a apartment and my finances together without him/ legal matters of custody). It's really hard and my dr and therapists are talking about putting me on one. I'm trying my best to stay away, but it's helpful to know other moms are on them and it wasn't the worst thing for the baby. Thanks ladies!

I took one the entire time with my second. I have a history of postpartum depression that I never resolved after my first baby. It helped me tremendously. I stopped taking everything this time, I'm in a much better, safer place and it was agreed it would be okay for me to stop. I have an SSRI on call if things start getting rough and I need it though.

I agree with pp that therapy is a huge part of getting to a better place. Be very proactive!! And be vocal!! Tell anyone that will listen what you're feeling! Don't suffer in silence. My girls pediatrian was a huge advocate for me, he always made sure to start by finding out where I was with my mental and physical health. As moms it feels like we should have this whole thing down, we're woman, we were built for this! But the reality is that sometimes we may struggle, and that's okay!! Just get yourself the help you need. Baby needs a happy, healthy momma!!
  • I take 100 mg of Zoloft. The doctor has not said anything about weaning off in third trimester. She had had several patients on it and deliver with no side effects to baby.
  • I was on 50mg of Zoloft when we found out we were pregnant, I bumped it up to 100mg in April because the 50mg just want doing enough anymore. We plan to drop down to 50mg in July and 25mg in August to hopefully decrease the chances of baby going through withdrawals after birth. Then I'll probably bump back up to 50mg for awhile.
  • I'm on 15mg of Lexapro and my doctor said it's even fine while I'm breastfeeding.
  • I've been through three docs and none of them have suggested to be off Zoloft until a few weeks at very end so there no withdrawal effects with baby. One of my doctors said Zoloft is one of the safest ssri to take during pregnancy.
  • Thanks all for your input! I appreciate it very much :) Mental health is equally as important as physical health. Can't have one without the other.. And baby needs a happy momma. Glad not everyone is super judgy/stigmatic towards this subject.

Hope you all are well, and thanks again for responding. Very reassuring :)
  • I was on a relatively low dose of citalopram and weaned myself off in March. I was doing fine without it till now. My husband has bad bipolar symptoms right now and I'm not handling it well this time around, my BP is higher than it should be, and I could really use it now. Dr had recommended being off it by the last two weeks before delivery but I had been doing so well I just didn't refill it in March. Like I said, I wish I had. Natural remedy recommendations?

I have been taking it since about 10 wks of pregnancy. Started at 25mg and has increased to 50mg. I don't notice a difference between the two doses although I have improvement over all with continued treatment. I am not sure what I'll be sing when breastfeeding time comes but for now it's keeping me somewhat comfortable. Reward should outweigh the risks and at this point in the pregnancy it shouldn't have any risks. Good luck! Remember that it does take about 3 weeks before you will notice a difference with the medicine.
  • I am on Effexor 150mg with this pregnancy and was with my daughter 6 years ago. My OB gives me her full support and agrees it is best for all involved :) Best wishes!
  • I was taking Paxil for anxiety/depression. When I became pregnant, the doctor didn't like that I was taking Paxil and switched me to Zoloft. She said Paxil can cause damage to babies in the 3rd trimester. It took some time to get used to Zoloft but now it is really helping me get through. My doctor said it would be safe to take it during the whole regnant. She also said I could take an Ativan during labor if I got too anxious. (I have an issue with ivs)
  • there's always commercials I see for lawsuits against Zoloft during pregnancy, so just be careful
  • Are you sure it's Zoloft and not zofran? I've only seen the commercial for the zofran. It's an antinausea. Which I am also having to use :/
  • I am also on celexa and have been for years. We lowered my dose quite a bit when I found out we were expecting. I still feel great and am glad I will be already on it once baby is here as I have been dealing with depression for 16 years off and on. Your doctor should know what's best for you and your situation though hopefully, and you can always go somewhere else for a second opinion if you are questioning anything
