Cold hands at night

Hi. Wondering if anyone has any advice - when DD wakes for a feed during the night (c. 2-3am) her hands are always cold. She sleeps in a babygro (short sleeves) and sleepsuit (long sleeves and legs - it's still quite cold here in the UK!) and we have a blanket covering her but, as per guidelines, we tuck this around her under her armpits so there is less chance of it covering her face as she sleeps. She has always slept with her hands stretched out above her head, so the blanket can't cover them and any kind of scratch mitt we try and put on comes right off.

Her overall temperature is fine, but just wondering if anyone has any ideas/advice on how I can try to keep her hands warm?

  • As a nurse said to me babies are like puppies - cool noses and 'paws', but should be warm elsewhere - just check the back of their neck.  Their circulation isn't totally mature yet, so feet and hands might seem cool to us.

I put my baby in those onesies that cover hand and feet, mainly to stop her from scratching herself or pulling her hair but it keeps her warm too, you should try it i get them at mothercare or mamas and papas
  • My LO scratches his face and is Houdini when it comes to pulling off scratch mittens. We've been putting socks on his hands which work better. He still sometimes gets them off but not as easily.
  • We put DS in a lot of long-sleeved onesies that come with an extra bit of fabric on the hands that flip over to cover them.
