IVF costs in twin cities?

Hi all,

DH and I have been TTC for almost 2 years, and are currently doing IUIs. We are thinking about ditching IUIs and converting to IVF. We currently go to RMIA in Woodbury, but after receiving very brief information about the cost, we're hoping there is a more affordable option in the Twin Cities. My insurance covers IUIs up to 6 cycles, but not IVF, like most insurance.

I don't even know where to begin... I had a friend who had gone abroad for IVF because it is significantly cheaper, so that might be something we'll look into, as well. I would obviously prefer to stay around here, though.

I did see the previous thread of successes at the different clinics throughout the metro, and am hoping that one of these clinics are a little less expensive.

Any insight is appreciated! :)

Re: IVF costs in twin cities?

  • My clinic was the metro obgyn in Maplewood with Doctor Flynn. I love her and she still my doctor. I love how close they would monitor all the process and all. I paid 3000 and my insurance covered the rest until we reached the 50000 (3 iuis and 1 ivfs). Unfortunately didn't work for me, but it is not their fault. I was meant to become a mom in a different way - adoption, but I highly recomend that clinic.
  • Thank you so much for the info, ladies! We currently go to RMIA in Woodbury, and are on our 3rd IUI cycle. We decided to be done with IUI after this one, if it doesn't work. My insurance pays for up to 6 cycles, so we couldn't pass it up. Even with insurance, it's almost $1,000/month out of pocket, so if #3 fails, we would rather pump the money into IVF.

We're attending the IVF seminar at our clinic on Feb 19 to get information and pricing, and might go to a couple others at clinics throughout the metro to compare. So far, just researching online, we've found that mini-IVF (potentially Chicago or St. Louis) or IVF in another country is much cheaper than regular IVF around here.

Thanks for the information! I really appreciate your taking the time to respond! :-)

  • We used RMIA and did the shared risk program. I believe it was 22k up front with 3 fresh cycles and a frozen for each fresh cycle that didn't work. If you didn't achieve a live birth after all of those you got 16k back. We were successful on the first try and miscarried from an unknown autoimmune disease, as soon as RMIA figured it out we tried again and were pregnant with twins! I know they are expensive but I wouldn't want to do IVF anywhere else.

  • @Wille2b, thank you! Your message is very helpful. We are attending the February IVF seminar on the 19th at RMIA to get more information about the different programs. Initially, we thought that DH had low numbers (specifically, motility) because the first two SAs were really low, but then the last two were better-- one was "almost" normal and the most recent one was "outstanding"! I have two children from a previous marriage, and have no issues, but also went through the complete work up- twice- and had an HSG. So, we aren't incredibly positive why conception on our own or with IUIs isn't working. Male factor infertility doesn't seem to be completely inaccurate, and it's more unexplained.

Anyway, so we are going to attend the seminar at RMIA in February, then attend the seminar at CRM to see how they compare. We are also looking into mini-IVF in St. Louis or Chicago as a less expensive option, since our insurance doesn't cover IVF. So frustrating.

Thanks again for all the wonderful advice, all! :-)

  • @hikerlady, that is great advice. I have heard that acupuncture helps, but haven't really given it much thought until just this moment. I just checked out the website of the place you mentioned and intend on calling my insurance tomorrow to check into coverage! Thanks!

@MagicMikki- PM me if you want to get together for coffee and chat.  I know we didn't get to talk too much about it at brunch a couple of weeks ago.  Get to the CRM intro seminar early- it gets packed!
  • @TwinCitiesMomma, thank you!! I will definitely be in touch with you, I appreciate it. Also- great advice about getting there early. That isn't something I would have thought about. :-)

  • My friend has gone out of the country for IVF and has also had IVF here if you want her info to chat, I'm sure she'd love to share her experience. I agree about the acupuncture recommendation. If you are looking for a recommendation, let me know. Good luck!

  • @ilovebijou , Thank you! We have also considered going out of the country and have started to look into it, but it's overwhelming. We have also read up on costs in other states, and there are a few other states that appear to be significantly less expensive, but it's hard to tell if I'm comparing apples to apples. I might take you up on the offer for your friend's contact information, but will send you a private message at a later time, if we decide to move forward with looking into. Thanks again for the offer, I appreciate it. :)

  • Prices between CRM and RMIA are fairly comparable but CRM might be a titch higher. I've been a patient at both (IUIs at RMIA; IVF at CRM). When we were looking at IVF we sat through both presentations and had another consult at CRM (we had met with them in consideration for iui). Switched to CRM due to slightly higher stats and the fact that despite my age I qualified for their warranty program.

We are blessed in the twin cities to have a number of excellent clinics to choose from!
  • Hi - I just went through IVF with CRM and had a great experience. We did the shared risk program which was about $20k, but another $3k (I think) for meds and then there was some out of pocket b/c I had to meet my deductible. This was for monitoring ultrasound. The shared risk included 3 fresh IVFs and 3 frozen and a 100% money-back guarantee with no baby.

I got lucky and it worked on the first try! I also did acupuncture for 7 months prior, which could've helped. Good luck! Kuneck was my dr, and he was good. I also saw Dr. Erickson and Casey at different appts, and both were very good.

@MagicMikki if your insurance doesn't cover acupuncture, the Maplewood Community center offers group acupuncture on Friday afternoons for only $25. I did it once for other reasons and the person seemed pretty knowledgeable, keep meaning to go back. Need to schedule about a week ahead of time to get in but it's otherwise pretty easy.

@FiancB, I vaguely remember you posting something else that led me to believe you were from MN! :-)

Thanks for the advice! I live in the Maplewood area so this is such great news that the MCC offers it for so inexpensive, and on Friday afternoons! Thanks!
