Weight loss, when to be concerned?

I'm 6 weeks 5 days. Four weeks ago I started out at 132 lbs and I just weighed myself and came in at 124 lbs. I know some weight loss is normal in the first tri but 8 lbs in 4 weeks seems like a lot to me. Google didn't really give me a good answer. I think the weight loss is from anxiety and nausea. Should I be concerned?

Re: Weight loss, when to be concerned?

  • Are you eating enough?  If you're able to eat regularly and are eating healthy foods, that's a great place to start.  If you've been getting really sick and not keeping foods down, that would be concerning to me.  I might put in a call to your OB's nurse line just for peace of mind.  Maybe add in some nutritional shakes or other calorie-dense foods to be sure you're getting enough calories.

  • Hey I'm 5+6, was about 130 and lost about 5lbs in the last 2 weeks. I've been a bit off food but not being sick- trying really hard to eat healthily and often (feel like I'm eating so much!!) but don't seem to be gaining it back :/ I'm thinking that perhaps my body is working really hard with the pregnancy that I'm burning extra calories or maybe urinating more frequently which is causing more water weight to be lost- I don't know really... but you're not alone!!

Not normal if you haven't been sick - mention it to your doctor. You  shouldn't really be gaining weight at this point (just for other's information) and any weight loss over 10% is of concern and should be mentioned to a doctor (you're not there yet, but there isn't a huge difference between 8 and 13 lbs). While it's concerning for the average woman, this might be completely normal for you, so don't freak out :)

  • I've not had much of an appetite but I've tried to eat calorie dense foods like nuts and seeds, high protein foods like chicken, and veggies/fruits. I can't do very large portions before I start feeling a gagging reflux. I'm not vomiting, just can't get a lot down. Maybe I will see if I can move up my appt with my doctor just in case.

  • It never hurts to call :) They've usually got a nurse in the office just for that purpose :)

  • I'd put in a call. If you're already that sick, they can help you with that, if not then it seems like a little too much to be losing so quickly.

  • I emailed them hours ago and still -impatiently- waiting a response. I had a hard time getting much down again today. I'm seriously wishing I could fast forward the next 6 weeks!

  • I lost 11 pounds in 3 weeks with my son. I went from 146 to 135. I was just never hungry. I ate until I was full, I ate healthy food, and I took my vitamins daily. I also never vomited with my son. It was simply what my body did when I was pregnant. Hope you get an answer soon from your OB!

That's a lot of weight to lose! Glad to know it wasn't cause for concern.

I'm still waiting to hear back from my Dr. Should be in the next hour or so.

  • Update: Dr not too concerned but did move my appt up to Monday. The nausea is getting worse though. I'm so miserable! My son's pregnancy was not this hard!

  • I wouldn't worry too much. If you start losing too much your doc might give you something for nausea. With my first I lost to the point where they were telling me to eat taco bell every meal every day lol. Eventually I gained it back and then some. Just do your best to eat when you're feeling up to it and try and snack even when you don't.

It's fairly normal for me and my pregnancies. With my first baby I weighed 5 pounds less than when I got pregnant, right before I gave birth. And I was a normal weight when I got pregnant. And all my babies were healthy and over 8#. My last one was 10#6oz. So try not to worry too much. It could just be what your body does. I also get very queasy and then once I'm not queasy I am all baby and there isn't a lot of room for food. Not to mention I am usually eating healthy food and not crap when pregnant.
