Night Time Feeds

My DS will be 3 weeks on Wednesday. He is doing awesome with breastfeeding and gaining weight. Birth weight: 7lbs 11oz. As of 2.5 weeks old he weighed 8lbs 15oz.

When he first came home from the hospital after losing 13oz they told me to make sure he was eating 8-10 times per day.

My LO likes to sleep long stretches at night the past few days. Tonight I woke him up after 6.5 hours since his last feed. He ended up eating only 6 times today.

Should I be concerned? Or grateful? He continues to gain weight, is alert during his awake times during the day, and has no problem nursing or drinking breast milk from the bottle. But I am such a numbers person that it worries me to see him eat only 6 times and to have such a long stretch at night without a feed.

How long do your LO's go without feeding at night? How many times do they feed in a 24 hour period?

  • Yeah that's great I wouldn't worry my DD is breastfeeding and went 7 hours a couple of nights ago,
  • My DD is the same way. Ever since she gained her birth weight back she sleeps 6 hour stretch at night and then another 3 or 4 after she is fed. I never count how many feeds she gets in a day any more. I just feed on her demand. She is happy, healthy, alert and gaining lots of weight so I'm not worried
  • Thank you! This is very reassuring. I hate lying in bed awake worried that he's not waking up. Time to take advantage of these long sleeps and get some sleep myself!!!
  • What I read and heard from docs is to wake the baby for feedings until they regain their birthweight. Once they hit that milestone you don't need to wake them to eat. I stealth change my dd as she has sensitive skin and got rashy when I didn't. She doesn't fully wake up.
  • I heard the same as above. My pediatrician told us at her two week appt since she had passed her birth weight to feed when she is hungry! Our babies sound exactly the same! She has her last bottle around 9:30 or before and doesn't wake up until 3:30 or 4 then goes back down until around 7! We are very lucky!
  • I don't wake her at night since she was at her birthweight at 1 week old. I really don't know how many times she eats in a day either...I feed her every 2 hours or so or if she seems to be hungry earlier than that.
