Delayed cord clamping...anyone?

I've been seeing more and more articles about delayed cord clamping, just for shits & gigs, what's everyone's opinion on this?

My plan is to do this. We can't afford blood banking, and I can't find anything negative about doing this... So why not?

I read something else last week that listed potential benefits and risks. The risks seemed to be proven facts, whereas the benefits haven't totally been proven, so I'm kind of on the fence about it. I do plan on asking my doctor's opinion at my appointment next week and I'll kind of go from there.

It is standard protocol at my hospital. Unless the baby is premature the benefits outweigh the (minimal) risks in the opinion of the doctors. It's between everyone and their doc but I'm doing it!

I am going to donate the cord blood. I won't pay to bank it but I hope it can help someone else.

I'm doing it. I talked to my doc about it at my last appointment, and he said evidence supports the practice, and that he believes that the recommendations will soon be updated for all deliveries to delay across the board, unless of course the baby is in distress and needs immediate care.

I'm going to talk to my OB about the benefits of this also.
The only negative I have found (in my opinion) is that if you delay the clamping the hospital is unable to donate it. I feel a tad selfish in that as I am an organ donor myself, but also want the very best start for my baby.
I'll make my final decision after speaking to my OB at our next appointment and also a midwife at my Preadmission Clinic appointment in a couple of weeks.

We were going to donate our cord blood but our doctor informed us that donations are no longer being accepted in our area because the supply is so high. With that being said, we will be doing delayed clamping. Our doctor explained that it is standard practice fat our hospital that they delay clamping for one minute. She recommended we not do any longer than that. Since we trust her, we are following her advice.

At the hospital I work at it is standard for all deliveries, even with premature babies. (Usually upon the discretion of the neonatologist if the baby is needing resus done) We still do cord blood donation after delayed cord clamping, but sometimes do not get as nice of a sample.

(This is in Canada...)
