Preeclampsia

hey everyone! I was admitted to the hospital last Monday (a week ago) for preeclampsia. I've been on hospital bed rest ever since and will be until delivery. My blood pressure is 140s over 90s consistantly and my protein levels are +3. They have me on constant monitoring an procardia twice a day. This morning I went for my twice weekly ultrasound and her fluid levels are measuring at a six (instead of 14 like they are supposed to) and three of my dopplers came back elevated quite a bit. She also failed her biophysical for breathing exercises. They started me on steroid injections today and they will do another one in 24 hours (ouch) to help her lungs develop quicker. I'm freaking out a little because I'm only 31 weeks and baby is measuring small. I'm just wondering if anyone else has past experience with all of this because it's pretty scary and I'm not sure what's going to happen. The doctor comes to talk to me every day, but I'm hoping to hear some first hand stories to help alleviate some of my worry. Anyone else out there have experience with this?

Re: Preeclampsia

  • NO experience, but you are living my fear right now(my BP is the same as yours).  I will be sure to pray for you and that baby! Keep us updated.  Also, if it helps ease your mind any, my niece was born at 24wks due to her mama having eclampsia and she is a happy healthy 7yr old today.  Other than a NICU stay, she has been 100% healthy her entire life!

  • Suggest you ask on the high risk board, it's kinda slow-but many moms come back to share their stories and provide encouragement.....and there's a bed rest check in there too.

  • I'm so sorry. That has to be so scary. Thankfully you and baby are well taken care of right now. They will only do what will benefit her the most. Don't worry about the measuring small bit. That's usually wrong, but even if she is small, that doesn't mean underdeveloped, just little. And from what I've heard, the steroids are very effective. Hang in there. I'm sure she will be just fine.

  • My friend just had her baby today at 32 weeks after her water broke a few weeks ago, he is doing great and came in at 3 lbs 11 oz :) trust the doctors, it's amazing what they can do. Praying for you!!
  • My sister-in-law was admitted to the hospital around 28 weeks with preeclampsia.  She had to stay up until she gave birth (around 34 weeks, I want to say).  They gave her steroids, etc, the whole nine-yards, like it sounds like you're having.  This was almost 18 years ago, but my niece was born super healthy, and is a REALLY healthy 17 year old now.  She's been accepted to a D1 school for soccer, and my SIL says that all of the extra help she had developing her lungs in-utero is what helped her become the soccer star she is today...!! (who knows if that's true or not, but it's cool if it is!).

So, if all of it can work out so well almost 18 years ago, I imagine they have a better handle on it all now!!! Best of luck to you.  It must be so worrisome and boring in the hospital, but it's good that they're doing all they can for your little one!!!
