Baby Shower Timing

Since we all are due in Jan, our timing for baby shower is holiday time. Anyone looking to do it every November instead?  With friends and family booked up most weekend in December and spending money on their holidays, I find it a tough to find that perfect time to have one.

Just looking to see if anyone else thought of it! And what your thoughts are!

Re: Baby Shower Timing

  • My sister-in-law was due in January last year, and she had her shower November 24. It worked because a lot of the family was already gathered together for Thanksgiving a few days later. I don't think there'd be anything wrong with doing a shower in early December though as long as you plan in advance and don't get too close to Christmas.

  • I was thinking of doing a "sip and see" instead since I won't be due till the end of January. https://www.thebump.com/a/sip-and-see-party I think it would be a lot to fit in with Thanksgiving, Christmas, Hannukah, and New Year's otherwise and I want everyone to meet the baby.

  • ^^^ sounds like a great plan honestly
  • I'm not expecting a shower if I end up having another girl. But if it's a boy then if anyone wants to throw me one I think early to mid November is a good time. It doesn't need to be right before your due date. You'll want time to exchange things, get everything washed and organized, etc. I think December is off limits for the most part due to holiday parties and traveling.
  • @claireloSC I am planning the same! Everybody that asks me about a baby shower acts so surprised I would rather have a "meet the baby" get together.

I don't want anybody to feel obligated to purchase gifts. I just want a relaxing day with no games or decorations taking in the moment :)
  • I'm planning on the beginning of November to completely avoid the holiday season and so that I can buy whatever else I need for Black Friday :)

You're a genius! Totally going to take this into consideration!
  • I'm due late January, so I'm thinking either around Christmas since my besties will be in town for the holidays and it's convenient for them or maybe early November so I don't get in the way of the holidays. I'm also hoping for a coed shower with lots of funny games!
  • Maybe mid-November! My cousin who got married two months after me is due 5 weeks before me in early December, I'd love to have her be at mine.

I don't think we will have a baby shower because although this is our first child we recently moved overseas. My extended family and friends have always done more of a "sip and see" rather than a baby shower, which is nice if you aren't relying on the baby shower for the necessities. Generally a family member would host this baby shower/sip and see a couple of weeks after the baby arrived (giving the new parents a bit of time to adjust). We are currently living in the Netherlands and the culture here seems to be that people will drop by to see the baby and bring a present in the week following birth, and the new mom and dad provide tea and bread with either pink or blue sprinkles. Luckily there is also a Kraamzorg (type of nurse) that comes to your house for the first 8 days after the baby is born and they will make the tea and serve the bread with sprinkles (in addition to helping you with all things baby related which is their main job).

  • We are waiting until June/July after the baby is born. My sister is getting married in April so we don't want to overshadow her special time. We aren't finding out the sex of the baby so we think it will be fun to do the shower after the baby is born and everyone knows the sex of the baby :-)
  • I think that's a good idea I was also thinking that I have it maybe the weekend after black friday so that way my family can buy things that weekend.
  • My mom actually suggested one ad early as October, like doing one on Halloween then having anyone with kids (they're all small) have the option to stay and all trick or treat at out house. It avoids the holiday hooplah and I'll be 30 weeks since I'm due early jan....

Too ridiculously early?? I kinda thought it was perfect because it always gets so crazy nov/dec
  • I would go w/ first of December...it is after Black Friday so they could get good deals and still a few weeks away from Christmas.

  • @BabyRut2015 I wouldn't call that too early. I'm planning on within a week or two after and I'm due in Min Jan. I want to be able to enjoy my shower and still have time to buy what I need before I get too tired. I also want to be able to enjoy the holidays and not be running around trying to get things ready.
  • We are planning beginning of November as well just to miss the holiday season!
  • @willashbaby yea it's our first and I figured being due in the 1st week of jan, it's only a little earlier than most people do. Plus I feel like once November rolls in everyone gets focused on Xmas, and with a lot of our friends having small children maybe this will be better for them financially annnnd avoid any xmas activities (get togethers, xmas tree outings etc.).

Plus I just thought having it on Halloween sounded kinda fun.

We are getting so many hand me downs we likely won't be registering or asking for anything big.
  • I don't think there is a "right time" for a shower...if someone offers to give me one, I will suggest it be in late October or early November but will be thrilled to have the company of my friends and family as we celebrate!
  • Lurking here...

My sister was due Jan 15th a few years ago. We had her shower on Dec 1st and had a great turnout - even friends and family from out of town came in.

I was thinking end of October/early November. I'm due the first week of January, so it will only be 2 months before...which I figure is perfect.
  • My best friend back home wants to throw me one, so it looks like I'm having mine SUUUUUPER early in September where I'll be around 24 weeks, because I have to fly and no way am I flying in my third tri. But by then we will know the sex so at least we have that. So you can feel better since mine is so much earlier lol.
  • We are due Jan 15th and because my parents fly to Florida for the winter we decided to do a shower mid September. This way my mom can attend and I will be much more comfortable than I would be closer to my due date :)
  • @Trisham1201 I'm due Jan 29th, so anything in December is still over a month before my due date, so unless something goes seriously wrong there's no chance of water breaking or anything, lol. My bff and mom are throwing mine December 20th BECAUSE of the holidays! I know everybody else is avoiding December because of the holidays, but a few days before Xmas is when my MIL will be in town, when my friends in law/med/grad school around the country will be back home, when cousins who have moved cross country will be back home...if I did any other time of year, I wouldn't be able to have some of my closest family and friends there!

    Exactly this.
  • Mine will be ridiculously early, because my mom is throwing it. She lives out of state, and DH doesn't want me traveling to visit her to close to my due date.... so, mid-October it is. I'll be about 27 weeks, lol. I'm just grateful to be having one at all. It's my third baby, but my kids are 6 and 8, so I don't have anything but a few clothes anymore...
  • I told my side to have it end of October so we can do a Halloween theme. And it'll be easier for everyone to travel before our infamous Appalachian winter sets in! Have no idea what hubby's side is planning, if their planning anything.
My parents have already bought us a few thing, outfits, a pack-n-play/bassinet/changing table combo of awesomeness! And when my MIL saw it she said "isn't it to soon to buy anything for the baby?" wow! Thanks for implying my worst fear could still happen. Like that's not on my mind every day. Should I wait a year after its born to buy it anything just in case?
  • I'm due Jan 14th and my sister booked the venue for Dec 12th. Should be interesting...
  • I'm due Jan 2, but wanted to avoid all holidays, so I'm having mine in the middle of October.

  • My mom is having mine at the beginning of October and my MIL at the beginning of November. Fall is a hard time with us and once November hits, it's full fledge holiday stuff until January. I'd like to have time to put everything away and buy stuff we didn't receive and not feel rushed. FTM here so we have nothing from prior kids.
  • We're doing beginning of November. Then I can go Black Friday shopping too!

Mines Nov 14th and that's why I chose that date too :) glad it's gonna work out like that, so I can scope out sales on anything and everything!
  • I'm due on January 11th, we are having my
Shower on November 14th before it gets too crazy with the holidays.
  • My mom is planning it for November 7th. Ftm due 01.11 having a boy . Yay!!!!!
  • My fam is planning ours late October. My due date is 1/5
I think it will be perfect because I wont be tottalllyyyyy huge and miserable yet haha, we will still have plenty of time to get what ever else we need, and nobody will be totally broke for the holidays yet haha
  • Due Jan 14 and I have a shower Oct 24 and one Nov 14. That way we can get whatever is left during black Friday and the showers are done before holiday madness hits. :)
  • Mine will be October 24 - sister in law getting married in November and don't want to have it as late as December with holiday madness so October it is! Everything I read said anytime in the 3rd trimester is perfectly fine!
  • 3Rd weekend in October, wanted to say far from holidays and I know how busy November gets, and it happens so fast! Of course, days a were limited by my hostess to avoiding football game days lol.
  • I'm due 1/5 and we're having ours on November 7th.
