Large Baby Questions

I had an ultrasound at 34+4 last Wednesday because my fundus was measuring 37.5 weeks. It turns out that our baby boys head measurements are measuring around 39 weeks and in the 97% as well as his abdomen measurement. They say he was weighing in at 6 lb 11oz and if I carry to 39 weeks that he will already be 8lb 15oz. I'm not only scared because I really want a natural birth but also because his femur was measuring in the 6%. I have read this is a potential indicator for Down's but all my previous screenings had absolutely no indication. The humerus is measuring at 78% so really it's just the femur that concerns me. Anyone else going through this or gone through something similar with a previous child that can help ease my mind?!

These measurements are only estimates, and usually not very accurate ones. Even if your baby did weigh 8 lbs 15 oz, that is not a huge baby and you can definitely still have a natural birth with a baby that size. I was over 9 lbs when I was born and my mom had me naturally. Women have much bigger babies every day. That being said, they are often wrong, my Dr told me DS would be 7.5-8 lbs and the delivery Dr told me 8 lbs 7 oz was her guess....he was 6 lbs 5 oz. The techs are never 100% on these measurements and they are not very reliable. I would not stress at all. Edit to Add: DS also had (has) a huge head, always has, never been a concern by any Dr and he is a perfectly healthy extremely smart toddler.

  • My oldest was a vaginal and weighed 9 pounds 8 ounces.. She did get stuck.. But she still came out. I measured ahead the whole pregnancy.
With my second she was a c section (because of the way the first went) And 2 days prior, they did a scan and said she was 5 to 7 pounds, my doc felt her from outside my belly and said "she's no more then 8 pounds!" She weighed 9 pounds 10 ounces.. Estimates are not always accurate. Some people have the doc say there baby is 9 pounds and comes out 6,
As for the femur, it seems that it would have shown up an issue in the early scans, so they probably just didn't get a good reading.
  • Thank you ladies! That makes me feel much better :)
