Started a new job at 26 weeks..

So I started a new job almost 3 weeks ago for the additional benefits of salary increase and the ability to telecommute but a little nervous. I'm due August 28th but my job won't allow me to utilize my accumulated leave until September 1 and I keep hearing little jokes about "holding the baby in" until after 9/1... Anyone else experience this or have any advice for a FTM?

  • I think getting any leave just starting is pretty awesome

  • I'm due August 28 too :) congrats on the new job. You may not be able to use your leave till sept, but seriously what are they going to do if you go into labor? Tell you you have to stay at work? No I don't think so. You may not get paid for a day or two at worst, but I wouldn't think they could fire you for going into labor and having to take some unpaid time off be for leave kicks in.
  • I'm starting a new job Monday. I'll be 29 weeks and I'm due Aug 27.  I have orientation Monday where I'll find out the details of my leave.  I had planned on taking 12 weeks off but not sure what the new job will allow.  It'll all be worth it though.  The pay increase was huge and the benefits go into affect immediately so we can use them for the birth (and they are way better than our current high deductible plan!)

I'm with everyone else...what can they do?  They know you're pregnant and they hired you..so they'll just have to deal. I'm trying not to stress about that (as I have enough to stress about!).

  • If you've been up-front about your due date, the employer likely has a plan in mind for accommodating your leave, but you'll need to ask about it. Once you been there a week or two, I would bring your concerns to your boss and the HR department, and just ask what happens if you go into labor early? Is there anything they can do to assist you?
I work in HR, and while I realize that not every employer is like mine, usually there are work-arounds. That is especially true if you approach it with a "Can you help me?" question. It gives the HR rep room for creativity.
    Congratulations on the position!
  • If you go on your due date and work up until the day before, that's only one day of unpaid leave, which is pretty good all things considered. Definitely listen to SKLLH23, talk to HR and see what your options are.

Congratulations on the new job! I think if a company is willing and ready to hire you while pregnant then that company must be a keeper!
  • You all have been amazing! Thank you so much for the advice
