Random cramps in calves?

At the beginning of the week I started getting cramps in my calf muscles from just about anything, stretching when I wake up, walking up stairs, climbing into the truck, etc.
Anybody else experience anything like that all of a sudden? It feels like a pulled muscle at first then just cramps for up to an hour afterwards.

  • Unfortunately leg cramps are very common during pregnancy. Try drinking more water and eating some bananas.

This exactly. Also try stretching with your feet flexed.

  • I didn't have them with my first baby, guess I didn't get as lucky this go around haha bananas and water are a must for me daily anyhow, so I guess I'll just have to watch what I'm doing with my poor ol' cankles! I just wish my legs would have given me a little warning first, maybe start me out with a dull ache before they jumped into the crippling cramps haha
  • Same thing happened to me. Stay hydrated is all I can say
  • I will give that a shot, I am a toe-pointer usually when I stretch. Or climb stairs. Or do anything really now that I think about it... I'll stay off the tippy toes!

With DS mine always came in the middle of the night and hurt so bad I would fly out of bed but yet I couldn't put my leg down for a few minutes...it was insane. This pregnancy *knock on wood* I have not had them. I am sure I will jinx myself and get them tonight!
  • I hope not! Good luck to you with that!

^^^ Yes. Also, when they are really bad, it helps to stand up and put weight on them.

They usually strike when I'm standing, moving around, or stretching, so try staying on my feet instead of sitting down then?

I've had them since the start :(( eating and drinking don't seem to help the only thing that does is movement. So making sure I'm active during the day and stretching the whole time. I've also noticed if you can keep your legs straight at night they don't hurt as much.
  • Epsom salt baths can also help - give you a little magnesium. Good luck!

Hmm, I'm not sure then! Mine almost always hit me when I'm laying or sitting down and I move suddenly or when I stretch out.
  • A banana a day and curl up your toes to the sky the *instant* you feel it coming on. I feel one starting a couple of times a day when I get up from lying down/sitting but I can interrupt it with the toe method each time! Good luck!

  • I drink LOADS of water and still get cramps when I stretch in bed. As a PP said, stretch with a flexed foot! It works for me. It's really normal to get cramping though so don't worry just be careful and move a little more gently when you feel them coming on.
  • I've gotten a few calf cramps in the middle of the night.  Something I'm trying to do is drink extra water before bed (yes, that means more midnight peeing) and I also do a little preventative leg stretching right before I go to bed.  It seems to help.  As others have said stretch your calfs with your feet flexed.  There's another stretch that really helps me too.  You stand on the stairs facing upstairs.  Make sure you have handrails on both sides and enough balance not to fall.  Put the ball of one of your feet on the edge of the step and then *slowly* drop that one heel below the edge of the step until you feel a good stretch.  This stretch feels amazing for me, and works a lot better than any other calf stretch I've tried.
  • I've become a pro at stopping these cramps in their tracks. As a PP said, as soon as you feel one coming on flex your feet. BUT make sure you're pointing your heel, not your toes. That's the only thing that has helped me get through them.
  • I get them at night. For me, just flexing them take it away immediately.
I had them with my first pregnancy too.
    fun stuff!!! Lol!
  • Ask your OB about effervescent magnesium when you feel cramps coming on.

And to prevent put your feet up in bed with a couple of pillows after standing or walking.

Also I ask my DH to give my calves a massage in the evening.

These have lessened much of my leg cramps. Good luck!
  • I get them at night, like when I'm sleeping or really early right be for I get up. Figure it has to be a dehydration thing. The first time it happened it was like 3am and I woke up in a ton of pain and my calf muscle looked like a softball sized lump. DH woke up in a panic, must have thought I was going into labor or something I was making such a fuss. He massaged my leg and I drank a bunch of water. Then in the morning had a banana smoothie. Haven't had it that bad since, but still get mild calf craps in the night when I'm drinking less water.
