Weight gain... Just venting.

Two appointments ago I got "yelled at" for gaining 4 pounds (TOO MUCH!!) between (4 weeks apart) appointments. Then I only gained 1 pound at the next one, and 2 pounds at this one. So at 28 weeks and being up 14 pounds, I'm now "under" the recommended weight gain curve, and the doc is concerned about THAT. FFS people, I'm growing a baby, leave me be!!

/rant. Maybe we can just vent about inconsistent doctors in this thread??

Re: Weight gain... Just venting.

  • That would be so annoying! My doctor has never said anything about weight gain in this pregnancy or the last and I'm glad. Weight should just never be mentioned to a hormonal pregnant lady unless you maybe gain a super unhealthy amount. But 4 lbs in a month seems like nothing.

  • That sucks! Thankful my doc has never mentioned my weight either.

My doctor usually tells me that it's alright I haven't gained anything, but that he'd like to see me gain some in the next few weeks.  This has been a constant conversation and I have yet to gain anything (I'm overweight though).  He's pretty great about not pushing it too much.  But when another of the docs sees me, I get chewed out for not having gained anything.  They are aggravating!

  • Some doctors are super vigilant about weight gain and others are more laid back. Mine is super vigilant, and I guess yours is too.

My doctor is super delicate about the subject but one of the others in the practice is known as the "weight nazi." I take it with a grain of salt and simply go about my pregnancy.

    Edited for spelling.
  • I know the feeling... I didn't gain anything until 20 weeks. My doctor was pleased with that since I was kinda chubby in the beginning anyways. Then I gained 3 lbs in 1 month and he said, "You're finally gaining weight! I was starting to worry!"
At 1 of my 2 week appts I had gained 5 lbs, but it turns out it was a sign of my pre-eclampsia gaining that much in just 2 weeks. Five days later I had a follow-up after the diagnosis and I had lost 3 lbs. He said he was glad I lost it, but now I have to be monitored more closely. Ugh.
  • Haha my doctor noticed I had gained a bit extra over the last two weeks and just shrugged it off saying it's probably water retention because of the heat and the swelling that just started. I'm up 30 lbs and she's not worried since everything else looks good.
  • I hear you!  At my 26 week appointment, the nurse practitioner scolded me a little bit because I had gained 9 lbs in 5 weeks.  I felt so nervous that I was going to come back at 30 weeks and have the same problem.  Well, I just got back from my 30 week appointment, and I guess I was so concerned about over-gaining that I've lost a pound.  Sigh.  So I'm up 13 lbs total, which is under the recommended weight curve.  The doctor I saw today (not the nurse practitioner) was not concerned, but I wish the nurse practitioner hadn't made a big deal in the first place.  It would have saved me a bunch of stress!
  • My doctor hasn't said anything about my weight. I was overweight when I got pregnant and haven't gained anything (I'm 28 weeks). I asked him if he was concerned at my last appointment, and he said no because the baby looks perfect.

I'm glad he's so laid back, it keeps mefrom stressing out!

So is mine and I actually appreciate the concern. I want to be told if I'm gaining too much too fast. I'm paying for my Dr. to take care of my baby and I. I want honesty.

  • I have to ask about my weight. I feel like I'm gaining to much but I'm not. I just don't want to keep the weight after my son is born. I wanna be back in a size 8 when I leave the hospital. I know that probably won't happen but a girl can dream!
  • Mine is generally laid back. She gives me super specific goals every time I come - "I want you to gain 2 pounds for the next visit!" Like that is something I can do perfectly well. But then when I go she always seems fine with whatever I have or have not gained.

So annoying about inconsistency! Weight can fluctuate by several pounds depending on time of day, water retention, what you've had to eat over the last several days, etc.

I know women who have gained 10 pounds and women who have gained 80 pounds during pregnancy and everything in between and gone on to have perfectly healthy babies. IMO the obsession with numbers on a scale and the "ideal" weight gain serves mostly to stress out already anxious pregnant women!!!

  • Mine hasn't said a word. I actually asked at my last appt for the first time, and I had gained 28 lbs between weeks 6 and 30. Apparently no one is worried about it. I gained just over 40 with my daughter and was back in most of my old jeans by 6 months PP so I'm trying not to worry about it...
  • My OB was nice enough to not say anything (since I get enough plenty unsolicited opinions from family and co-workers). She just said the baby was going through a "growth spurt" to put it nicely lol! It's been about a lb a week for me.

We have so many things to worry about and take care of, I prefer to be given some slack and not be pressured into having a Hollywood type perfect pregnancy.

Same here. 32 weeks Friday, and at my app. Today doc said I have gained 2 lbs since 10 weeks. Baby is doing well, and I am getting very thing needed for me and him.

I've gained almost 20lbs with 9 more weeks to go :( this is depressing sense I Only gained 14lbs total with my first baby and was a litte bigger starting out this time around. Hopefully it falls off as fast as it did with DS 1 within 3 months I was back to normal... However that was nearly 5 years ago I think I'll go in a corner and cry for a bit lol oh well I suppose all the weight gain and discomfort is such a little thing compared to the miracle we will meet in a few more weeks

Completely agree. It helps keep me accountable.
  • My doctor hasn't said one word about my weight gain. I started at a healthy weight and I'm athletic, but it has really helped me to not worry about it if my doctor isn't. My mom is a tiny lady and gained 60lbs during both pregnancies. She didn't work out, but said that she ate normally--that's just what her body did when she got pregnant, and she lost it all within 3 months. It is one thing to make sure you are eating healthy and doing the best you can to take care of your body. However, assuming that someone starts at a healthy weight, is eating healthy and being as active as they can, I think doctors fretting over weight gain can be really damaging. I happen to be lucky and not gain a ton during pregnancy, but what if my body just wanted to hold onto more weight? I would probably be distressed, and having my doctor give me a hard time about it would make it worse.
