fluid in kidney?

Hi all. I had my 31 week ultrasound today. The doctor said DS has some extra fluid/urine in one kidney. I am being referred to a mfm for a level two ultrasound and consult. I asked if that meant his kidney has a defect and she said no but it needs to be monitored due to chance of infection. I am super anxious over this. My 20 week anatomy scan was normal and otherwise baby lookd good. Has anyone had this problem?

    My baby had this issue as well at our 20 week scan. The doctor called it renal hydronephrosis and our baby had it in both kidneys. First word of advice, walk AWAY from Google! I worked myself into a tizzy thinking the absolute worst for no reason. My doctor said that the kidneys were a bit larger than he would have liked to see and they will just monitor it. Worst case scenario, the baby will have to be checked out after birth and then we would have to assess what the next steps would be. As long as there is plenty of fluid in the amnio sac, then that means that fluids and waste are still being flushed through little one's system. We are coming up on the 32 weeks scan to assess if the kidneys are still enlarged. In some cases, it just goes away on its own (what we are hoping for). 

    It will be ok momma! It's not a life threatening situation and is actually very common, especially in boys.  I was told that it isn't hereditary and there is nothing to be done to prevent it so let go of any guilt you may feel (like I did). Even if there is a chance of infection, it is something that is very treatable.

    At my 20 week u/s, the technician said our baby's kidneys looked great. I asked her what she was looking for, and she explained that sometimes the kidneys are enlarged because of fluid. She explained that it usually wasn't a big deal, and it just requires some extra monitoring.
