Baby Girl name HELP!

My husband and I are between two very pretty girl names but just can't seem to decide.
Ava vs Isla
I know Isla (eye-lah) could be mispronounced quite often (I lived with that my whole life and haven't minded) but I seem to keep going back to it. Ava has been my favorite name since I was 12, however, I don't want to have my daughter in a class with 15 other Ava's.
Thoughts?!

Re: Baby Girl name HELP!

  • I think Isla is very pretty and it seems to be getting more and more common, so maybe it won't get mispronounced too often.

Ava is EVERY WHERE I wouldn't personally use it (it kind of ranks up there with Sophia for me).

  • Both are very pretty. In my opinion, I think you should go with Ava if you've loved it all your life. You may regret not using it later if you don't. I get the popularity thing, but honestly Isla is becoming rather popular too, so you may end up with that issue any way. Ava is a timeless classic that won't seem trendy 20 years from now.
  • We're using Ava as a middle name for our girl Willow. It wasn't intentionally picked but I thought of it on one of the many sleepless nights I've had recently. It's a combination of all of the grandmas initials. Anne, Val and Angela.
  • I love Isla. I definitely stay away from the top 10 names.

I think that Ava is super popular and there will be a bunch in school with her. I prefer Isla but it's too popular for me. I think even that name there will be a bunch in school too.

I haven't seen a lot of people choosing Isla on the name board though.
  • Yes I agree that if popularity is a concern with Ava, Isla is probably not the best alternative. It has had a pretty fast rise over the past few years and keeps getting more popular. See Babynamevoyager for the exact numbers

You should just go with your favorite. You can also decide when you meet her!

  • Coming from someone who thought they were beating the popularity bus with Isabella (it's a family name), my daughter is the only one in her day school with that name...except for the baby class, there are 4 in a room of 12. At some point in time I believe all names come back to popularity.  I don't regret naming our daughter Isabella because of the significance it holds for me.  Also, we are naming this one Emma after a great great grandmother, and Emma is gaining popularity again as well. It doesn't deter the reason we are naming her that so to me it's not a big deal.  You just have to decide what is more important to you, a name you've loved for so long, or if other kids will share the name.  For the record, both are beautiful!

  • I have a friend named "ava" but she spells it Eva with an accent above the e. I think that is definitely unique. So now whenever I see the name eva I always say ava just because I'm so used to my friends spelling. Maybe you could change the spelling of ava to make it more unique??
  • As much as I love Ava, I wouldn't go with it because it's just too popular for my taste. Have you considered Mila (Mee-la)? It's quite similar in style, but not as common.

  • I love Ava, I started using it as my gamer name a few years before it became popular. But I used Avalyn first (Evelyn with a's) and Ava was the nickname people shortened it to. You could also consider Avalee, or a different spelling like Eiva. There is also Aiva (Eye-vuh) which was the beautiful winged warrior goddess in the promo artwork for the game Aion.

I don't like Isla because it's the name of my friend's dog, people don't know how to pronounce it, and everyone wants to name their daughter Isla this year.
  • My best friend is due in November and naming her baby girl Ila. I think isla is beautiful, however I wish my friend would spell it with the s.
  • I slightly prefer Isla although they are both lovely.
  • I like Isla also. I feel it's less common too.
  • I vote ava. I Had no clue that's now you pronounce isla.

  • I vote Ava too; Isla means island in Spanish plus its also a Hispanoamerican last name. Imagine if she married a guy whose last name is Isla?! That will be too funny :)
