Should we buy a diaper genie?

I've heard both ways. We live in a ranch style house. The baby will stay in our room for months and then switch to the nursery.

Re: Should we buy a diaper genie?

  • I know a lot of people don't think they're necessary, but I thought it was convenient and will be using one again.  Especially in the early weeks when they literally poop after every time they eat.

We have a two story house though.  And our outside trash can is in the shed in the backyard.  I really don't want poopy diapers to fester in my shed...in August :)

  • I was all about getting the diaper genie when we had DS two years ago because I wanted the smell to get locked in. However, I don't feel like it locks out smell at all. If you empty the bin relatively often, it helps, but I think a normal trash can with a step-open lid that seals well would work just fine, if not better. Plus, it sucks when you run out of the special bags.

I'm a ftm, but we decided against it. We also live in a ranch, so it seems easy to stay on top of it and less money. If I had a two story I would probably feel different.
  • I say no. we went with uppa baby pail. It's a better diaper pail. The diaper genie was terrible.

We used the Arm & Hammer version - the bags are way better because you don't have to tie them off. We used it pretty religiously for the first year, but now we have diapers in practically every trash can in our house! The key is to take the diapers out frequently.
  • I just take diaper trash out everyday and use a regular trash can.

This. It was a total waste for us.

This for us too. Between the diapers (we use cloth but have to throw away wipes and liners and the nighttime pampers) and just normal house trash, we get a bag full every-day and a half. I don't think the smell has ever been bad enough for a diaper genie.

  • We have one upstairs and down in our house. I think they're wonderful and we've never had issues with smelling anything unless they're overly full and need emptied.

My mom watches my DD, niece and nephew one day a week and just uses a bag for the day and then takes it outside when all the kids are gone. I can smell it immediately when I walk into the room where she changes the kids and there is no way I would want that in my home.

Hubs and I registered for the tommy tippee diaper seal system that we are planning on using for poopy diapers only, it seals the diaper 360 degrees all the way around to keep the smell out, while the diaper genie doesn't seal each individual diaper just the whole bag full. We don't like taking out trash that isn't 100% full, packed to the rim so we knew we'd have to have a diaper disposal of some sort besides just a plain trash bag so our house wouldn't stink up so badly.
  • I was originally not planning to get one, but after using different brands while nannying and babysitting, I changed my opinion. We have a very small apartment that gets stuffy and hot so the benefit of having something that locks the odor in, outweighs the additional cost. I also plan to stock up on the refills when my completion coupon arrives. Taking out the trash everyday would not happen at my house so this was best for us. I've used 3 brands before and the diaper genie by far is my favorite and holds in the smell the best. I bought a diaper genie elite.
  • We use a diaper genie which I think is fine for pee/breast milk/ formula poops. We live in a 2 story and taking out a bag of diapers everyday just wouldn't be for us. However, I don't think ANYTHING will contain the smell of solid poops so stock up on grocery bags now ;). Those get taken out after each one and now our diaper genie is just pee diapers.

  • I'm a FTM but my sister used a diaper pail that allows you to use any type of trash bag you want so it's cheaper and it didn't smell! That's what we plan on using
  • The poop diapers I bag in a grocery bag right away before tossing in the bathroom trash can so you can't smell them anyhow. Otherwise the rest also get tossed in bathroom trash and we take out the trash once or twice daily if as it needs. If you get a genie put some type of air freshener or essential oils in the bottom of the can or they will smell bad!
  • I heard the Diaper Dekor was way better than the genie, that's the one I'll be getting! I know 2 other moms that have and love that one too
  • I just bought a diaper genie elite for the baby room upstairs because my other one I had broke. This one came with an air freshener to stick to the lid which the old one didn't. I have loved having it because it's just really convenient.

    Agreed!
  • I have the genie elite. It does help with the smell tremendously. I couldn't smell anything at all till the solid poops went in. I now buy the smelly diaper bags at the dollar store and put the poop diapers in there before putting them in the genie.

I'll probably use one for this baby too.

  • We used the heck out of my diaper genie lol. I'll be using it again for sure!
  • Pee diapers we would just throw in our regular trash (which fills up quickly) poop diapers we just used plastic trash bags and took out to the large trash cans

  • We have the munchkin brand which was awesome until DS started eating real food and his poop started smelling like REAL poop! At that point, I don't think any diaper pail is strong enough to hold in that smell! Now we just use it for pee diapers and the poopy ones go right into the trash can outside.

Loved ours! Didn't experience any issue with smelling until DD1 was much bigger. I plan to use it again

We loved ours. We bought the bag refills at costco, so cheaper and always have them on hand.

  • Also, Target sells Up&Up brand liners that fit the DG.

  • I never bought one.  We live in a two story home.  I think dirty diapers sitting in a room for days is gross even if they are contained.  I just threw pee diapers in the trash can in the nursery and emptied it daily.  Poop went straight outside to the big garbage can (or to the garage step until my DH came home and took it out).

You could always go without it and if you decide you need it, go get one (or order it on Amazon and have it delivered to your doorstep).  :)
  • Pee diapers go in our kitchen trash can because that one gets emptied most often. Poop diapers get chucked in a grocery bag, tied up and also put in that trash can. If it's a really raunchy one, it gets double bagged. This is baby 3 and we've never had a diaper genie and this system has always worked for us.
  • I bought a dekor plus and it takes regular trash bags I just hope it keeps the smell out. I had the diaper genie before and as they grow in diaper sizes they don't hold as well with the turning thing and they start to smell faster.
  • I've been fighting DH on this one. He thinks the Diaper Genie is the magic solution to never have to smell poop diapers. I keep telling him it's a poop sausage pail and that no diaper pail will completely contain the stink when opened.

We have an Ubbi diaper pail, which I think would work as well as any stainless steal trashcan. It contains the stink until opened. My biggest gripe is if you let it get too full the top ring that holds the trash bag open has plastic inserts on the side of the pail that will grab and rip open the trash bag. Also if you shut the lid too hard after replacing the bag you'll pop off the rubber gasket and that thing is a beast to get back into place. So two little quirks you have to learn to work around.

Agree with PP that any pail will work like a diaper genie without the poop sausage hassle if you bag all poopy diapers.
  • We had a special diaper pail last time but honestly any small trash can with a closing lid works just the same. They all smell when you open the top to throw one in into you empty it all out. The pails are expensive and then require special bags/inserts all to throw away poop! I just ordered a $17 small trash can on Amazon with a foot pedal to open it and it takes standard bathroom trash can size bags, which they sell scented ones in a roll at target for cheap. We take out the big trash every other day so it won't sit for long. I would rather spend the money for refills etc on cute clothes ;)

  • We just use a small trash can and wrap the diapers in a plastic grocery bag before putting it in and then change the entire bag out every day and a half or so.
A diaper genie is great until it is time to empty it and you have a hundred poppy festertering diapers to smell all at once. Bleh!
  • Love the genie. Had one with my other 3. Got one for this LO too. I put a stick & refresh air freshener at the bottom of the genie & it doesn't smell in between. I always buy the refill bags in sets of three (cheaper) this way it takes a while before I run out.
  • I know this is weird, but we used a diaper genie when we were taking care of my grandmother. If, by some unfortunate mistake, a dirty diaper is not well rolled up when you dispose of it, the consequences are dire!! It smears everywhere, obviously smells terrible, and is a real pain to take apart and clean.
For DS we just put the diaper in a produce bag and then into the trash, but we do take it out every day.
  • We like the Munchkin/Arm & Hammer pail. Our first broke after over a year of daily use so we just bought another. I stocked up on bags when they were on sale at Target. Our house has three stories so there is no way we are taking diapers out every single day! The baking soda helps reduce the smell a bit, but since it is summer I moved the pail into the bathroom (attached to the nursery) and keep the door closed so her bedroom doesn't get smelly.
  • I'm a FTM and I debated getting one, but all of my mommy friends insisted that the Munchkin Arm & Hammer pail is the best.  They were so insistent that they bought one for me. I have seen one of theirs in use since then and I can see why it would be super convenient.

In my apartment building trash is only twice a week and we're not allowed to take out the trash until the night before collection. Basically without something similar to the diaper genie our house'd stink this summer! Definitely going to get something like it!
