What workouts are okay?

Since I found out I was pregnant I have been doing a prenatal yoga video and walking a lot.
I want to run, but Google said that running is only okay if you did it before you were pregnant. I wasn't a super consistent runner before pregnancy so I am worried that I shouldn't do it now.
Also I really want to go for a bike ride, but Google said that it wasn't safe because a pregnant belly throws off your center of balance and you have a higher risk of falling. However, I am only 4 weeks pregnant so do you think it is okay?

What workouts are you doing while pregnant?

Re: What workouts are okay?

  • It sounds like you're doing well with what you're doing. If you're not sure about running, I'd wait until you see your doctor. Walking and yoga are great though.

I swim 3-4 days a week and walk. I'm planning to add in some prenatal pilates.

  • Since its early I'm pretty much doing all that I've been doing. Running, cycling, weight lifting. The only thing I immediately changed was doing a lot of weight. I decreased and am doing more reps with each exercise.

I pinned this the other day too and it has some good suggestions.

I do yoga regularly. I plan to do a lot of walking. I also just bought Tracy Anderson's Pregnancy Project because why not. It has a work out DVD for every month of pregnancy.
  • I think a lot of it has to do with your comfort level.

Don't go out and train for a marathon if you weren't already doing so.

Don't hop on a bike if you haven't ridden since you were 12.

I found that I didn't get uncomfortable on a bike until the end of my first trimester, when I started to feel like I was squishing my uterus.  I'm sure I wasn't hurting the baby, but I found more comfortable things to do.

Mild exercises like walking and swimming are good.  That being said, swimming gave me serious braxton hicks contractions last time around, so I had to give that up.  So it's really about how you feel individually.  Listen to your body, and adapt as necessary.

  • I'm doing running training so it's shortish bursts of running and then walking. It's really hot here so I might just walk more than run. The. I do some body weight training. I sometimes do some yoga but I think I'll break out my prenatal yoga soon.

  • I'm cycling because I've been commuting by bike daily for three years. I will continue to do so until I feel uncomfortable. What do you think Danish women do while pregnant? They continue to bike of course. Americans have this weird impression of biking.
  • I've actually in my 2nd round of 21 day fix extreme. Plyo, yoga, weights, ect... I was a little worried that I would start spotting, but I've been taking it a little easy this time around. Do whatever your body is comfortable with, be cautious and no your boundaries :)
  • I think you just need to listen to your body and not push yourself. If you want to run and you weren't before, start slow and it's probably okay. Like PP said, don't start training for a marathon, but if you're in decent shape, some jogging is probably fine.

I rode a bike until mid-second tri last time, but I biked a LOT and was very comfortable with it.

Talk to your doc and stay within your comfort level is my best advice. :)

    Walking, swimming, hiking, toddler-wrangling.

Listen to your body - it will tell you what it needs and if you're pushing it too hard.

  • I was trained that it is ok for normal working out during the first trimester. After that no back abs, and everything else is what you are comfortable with.

  • A lot of it depends on your level of activity before you were pregnant. I wouldn't start anything new, and would avoid heavy lifting.

  • Like some PPs said, my doctor just said not to take up any new strenuous workouts that I wasn't already used to.
