Breastfeeding

How can I keep her awake long enough to feed from BOTH breasts?!

hi! My boobs are killing me. I'm trying to feed her on demand as much as possible but when we sit to feed she will only feed on one breast for about 10 minutes before conking out and sleeping in a milk coma. I try to feed her in the right breast as well but usually have to wait 2 hours before she's hungry again. By that time my other boob is killing me and so ful. I've tried stopping 5 minutes into the feeding and switching but then both just kill me by 2 hours bc it's not framing enough for relief. Pls help

  • Ha, yes, the milk coma!

We're having the same issue. I pump after feeding and usually get a lot less from the side where the baby fed.

  • How many wet and dirty diapers is your baby having in a 24 hour period? Does she seems satisfied? What color is her poo? How old is she?

It's possible that you have a very effcient nurser on your hands and may actually have oversupply. That was my son's exact behavior from newborn to almost 9 months only nursing on one side. I ended up having to block feed to get comfortable and my supply sorted itself out in a few weeks.
  • At night I unswaddle to wake my LO up, feed until she hits her milk coma and stops on her own. Then I burp her on my lap which she doesn't enjoy and change her diaper and re swaddle. That wakes her up enough to usually feed a bit from the other breast.
  • I nurse my son on one side and pump the other at the same time. It relieves the pain and has helper me create quite a huge frozen milk stash (over 500 ounces in the past 12 weeks since birth!). I have also found that the discomfort of nursing has gone away in time. For me it took about 8 weeks for my body to regulate.
