2nd Trimester

Constantly sick and possible gestational diabetes

Hi all, I mainly just lurk, but wanted to get a few opinions. I am 14 weeks pregnant with baby #2, and this pregnancy has been much more rough for me than my first one. I have been constantly nauseous an vomiting since week 7. This past weekend, I woke up with extreme shooting pain and cramping that even resonated down to my lower back - and I vomited continously for about three hours. Finally, I decided to go to the hospital. They said that I was dehydrated, and was suffering from gastritis. They gave me two different types of anti-nausea medicine and some morphine for the pain. They also told me I was deficient in several vitamins (likely because I have not been able to keep my pre-natals down for a few weeks.) They also tested my urine and said they found sugar in it. I have to go back tomorrow to submit another urine sample - but they said if that shows signs of sugar, than I will be diagnosed as having gestational diabetes.

First question - what anti-nausea medicine has worked for you? I was on diclegis for a little while, but ran out. When I went to get the prescription refilled, I refused because it was too much money. I don't want to take Zofran.

Second question - anyone dealing with/or have dealt with gestational diabetes? I am concerned that I am only 14 weeks, and sugar is showing up in my urine. I thought gestational diabetes usually isn't diagnosed until week 24-28.

I had none of these issues with baby #1, so all this is throwing me for a loop. TIA for any advice!

Re: Constantly sick and possible gestational diabetes

  • I was diagnosed with Gestational Diabetes at 11 weeks. It can start at anytime during pregnancy. I had sugar in my urine, but I did the glucose tolerance test after that. There is a common misconception that this is definitely a sign you were diabetic prior, but my mfm doctor said that is not necessarily the case.
I hope you feel better soon.
