Weaning self off of Diclegis

Hi Ladies,

I have been on Diclegis for nausea for the past two months of my pregnancy. I have been feeling much better and even feel like I would have even more energy without taking it. However the day after I skipped out on it, I felt awful all day and ended up throwing up for the first time in a long time. Is this normal? Did any of you wean yourself off nausea medication? How did you do it and what worked best for you? I am ready but I also don't want it to backfire. I am 16 weeks and 1 day today. Thanks for your help and suggestions.

How many a day are you taking?
I've tried to wean myself off by removing one of the pills in the afternoon about a week ago, but I ended up vomiting all evening.

I couldn't wean completely off of it last pregnancy. I took two a day right up to the day my son was born. If I only took one I would be very nauseated and would vomit. I tried many times to decrease the number of pills I took, but with always the same results.

  • I just stopped taking it all together. The 1st day was miserable I was vomiting 24/7. It got increasingly better everyday.
I had to stop taking it because although it was making the nausea go away, I was extremely tired. I felt like I was drunk or something. I couldn't take care of my 3 yo. Anyways it's been about a week and I'm still nauseated off and on...but no vomiting, so I have decided to not take it anymore.
  • @Mermaidmama2 yes! Exactly why I want to stop, I feel tired all the time and have a hard time waking up. I think tonight I am going to stop for good. I will have the long weekend to recover from it. Cold turkey! Thanks for your reply.

  • @anneof2 I take two before bed every night. I feel like my body is dependent on them now. I want to stop completely. I've decided to go cold turkey, hopefully it works! I hope you feel better too as well. Hang in there!

  • I was taking 2 before bed and 1 in the afternoon but after doing that for about a month and dealing with the exhausted feeling I just decided to stop taking it and see if the nausea passes on it's own around the 15 week mark (like everyone is promising). I'm week 13 now and every day is a little different- most days I'm nauseas but no vomiting, other days I do vomit a few times. It suuuuucks. Also, the meds didn't completely take away my nausea anyway so it was worth it to me. I hope we all start feeling like a million bucks soon! I'm so ready for it
  • That makes sense especially if they didn't completely relieve your nausea anyways. I'm waiting to feel like a million bucks too! Hopefully not too much longer...! :)

  • You can try decreasing your dose for a week then decrease it again. I wasn't able to wean off my anti nausea med until 21 weeks with my 1st pregnancy. I'm down to 1 fill pill before bedtime and feel pretty good at 15 weeks 6 days.
  • 21 weeks? Feels so far away. I am down to my last 2 doses in the bottle. I think I am going to go cold turkey. Hopefully....it works!

I'm 18 weeks, I've been taking one pill at bedtime. I haven't taken it for 2 days now trying to ween off. I am so sick today nausea, headache, and all around blah! I even bought sea bands to help, no luck. Needless to say I just took a dose. Sounds like there is some kind of detox that takes place with this :/

I weaned off at about 16 weeks. The night dose was the last that I dropped. I occasionally still get queesy but nothing compared to how I used to be. I am still taking Zantac and Prilosec though. I had terrible hyperemesis the first trimester though.
  • I just weaned off this weekend.  I am 15 weeks, but I am also on steroids for contact dermatitis (all over my body...and face). So, the steroids might be making me hungry enough to push me through the nausea, but I have been doing fairly well.  I hope you guys get through this soon.  I did think the diclegis made me tired.  I finally did stuff with my 2 1/2 yo this weekend.  I did crafts and played in the yard with a sprinkler.  I have missed having fun with her over the past few months.
  • I haven't taken diclegis, but just some general advice.  Discuss methods of weaning yourself with your doctor.  Many medications have withdrawal side effects which are as bad if not worse than the medication side effects or even the effects of what you were trying to cure in the first place.
