February 2016 Moms

obsessed with HCG #'s

I am honestly obsessed with HCG #'s and feel that all the things I look up aren't satisfying. I'm a high risk pregnancy due to previous ec's and mc in July of last yr. And in March of this year I had an EC & had my right tube and ovary removed. This is the first time TTC since surgery, and so dar its successful. Today I am 5w0d. LMP 5/3. My hcg at first draw was on 5/28 @ 54. Second was 98. Third was 257. Fourth 739. Fifth 2500! (All test were 48hrs apart)
anyone else have similar numbers?

Re: obsessed with HCG #'s

  • @inomniaparatus - it depends on risk level. Usually the higher risk you are the earlier you are seen. The norms seems to be 8-9 weeks.

@tartface9 - I'm obsessed too, but I'm trying to not read anything into my numbers versus anyone's else's. I've been ttc for 18 months with a mc at 8 weeks in December. I had my first blood test Tuesday at 4w6d #1240. The second was Thursday #2746. I go in tomorrow for my third test and then us on Thursday. Every little pain or bit of spotting sends me on an emotional roller coaster.

  • I only had two done, 1692 and 3206. Dr seemed pleased and didn't order any more. Those were at 19 and 21 DPO respectively.
  • The website www.betabase.info gives you charts on average beta numbers for different dpo of successful pregnancies.

  • Hi I have been obsessed with my numbers too! They just seem super high. The Dr didn't seem worried though. 4wks0days 288, 4wks2days 1044 and yesterday 4wks6days 8565. I know all preg are different and you can't compare numbers but I just want to see if anyone else has similar #'s.
  • At 4 weeks 6 days my hcg levels were 1800.

  • I just got my results back today from last Thursday which was 4 wks 0 d and it was 780. They drew again today, 4wks 4d, and I will find out tomorrow those results! From all the charts I have seen, the 780 is high for 4 wks!
  • At 4w4d 387(last Monday) then Wednesday 995 at 4w6d. Dr said my numbers look great.
  • How do you even know your hCG level?! All I know is I can make a second line show up on a pee stick...

I don't even see a dr for another 2 weeks and I think they told me over the phone I'd take a urine test in the office. I was concerned that I wasn't going to be getting a blood test done earlier. Do you guys go in every other day for more blood tests?

ETA: And how long does it take to report hCG levels? minutes? hours? days?

  • When women get hcg tests, it's often times because they have suffered on or multiple miscarriages. Most pregnant women are not offered these tests because there isn't a medical need. The first time I had ever even heard about getting a quantatative hcg test was when I started bleeding with my second pregnancy. You take a blood test and they usually have the results back the nest day... then 48 hours from your first blood test you have another... and then you compare if the hcg numbers are at least doubling in that amount of time. It's a very good sign of a viable pregnancy if they are. If they are not, you aren't always out.. but you will likely have another blood draw in the next 48 hours to be sure.
I have been blessed with two rainbow babies since my loss and I have requested hcg tests each pregnancy. It's really for peace of mind and so I personally don't get my heart attached to idea of a baby that might not come. That may sound coarse but my loss was unexpected and just about killed me.. so I would like to avoid that great sadness again, although honestly, I am not sure it would work and I would probably be just as devastated.
Anyway, I don't think there is anything wrong in asking your provider for these tests... they are not expensive and sometimes they can give you peace of mind.. good luck and congrats on your pregnancy!
  • I'm getting blood work done tomorrow due to previous miscarriages and needing to be on progesterone with my two previous pregnancies. I'm going to a new dr, tho, and had to request the bw since they didn't know my history.

  • I have suffered a miscarriage and was a high risk pregnancy and will be this time. Because of that my dr already has blood work done. My first pregnancy , I didn't do anything until 8 weeks bc I wasn't high risk. So it is actually a good thing you haven't had anything bc it means you are not high risk!
  • Its so amazing how the human body works.
    We grow people.
I know #'s aren't supposed to be worrisome or obsessed over. But I just like looking to see what others were at. And so far, with all charts I've seen compared to replies and threads I've read, its pretty good info.
    I am on betabase :)
    Thanks for the replies ladies!
  • Interesting. Thank you @eileenhealy and @DWorthy5 . It's my first pg ever and it freaks me out that a Dr isn't interested in seeing me until so late. How do they know I'm not high risk? It's a new dr! I'd be pissed if I miscarried and it could've been avoided if I was being monitored.

  • Try not to stress!! Easier said then done but try!! I was a nervous reck with my first pregnancy since I wasn't seen until I was 8 wks and a few days. So I asked the same question, how do they know everything is fine. But everything was with that one! I have a healthy, beautiful 15 month old little girl! They partly wait so long, unless you have symptoms of a miscarriage, bc they will do an ultrasound. They can't do it too early bc they won't be able to detect the baby or heartbeat yet and that will freak you out too! Just try and relax and enjoy! It always helps me to talk to the baby, probably why I get attached so quickly. Hang in there!!!
  • @geojam224 unfortunately as I learned there is not much if anything that can be done to prevent a MC. Especially if it's your first and you have no risk factors. Even if I was to have another MC and I am being carefully monitored there would be nothing they can do to save the pregnancy. The monitoring is more so to give a high risk mom some peace of mind about viability. I know it's easier said than done but try to relax and let your body do what human bodies have been doing for a very long time and trust the doctors that spent a very long time in school and practice.
