FTM- Nursing Bras

I'm a FTM and a little clueless on what kind of nursing bra I need. Will I need to get some to sleep in? How many nursing bras will I need? Is it better to get ones with or without wire? Has anyone gotten any from Walmart that they recommend or Lane Bryant? I have a lot of gift cards to both stores. Sorry if these are dumb questions!! I have no idea what I'm doing lol

Re: FTM- Nursing Bras

  • There are so many factors that go into purchasing nursing bras, but here is what I can help with!

    1) A lot depends on your chest size. I go from a 36B to a 40D or higher when nursing. So finding nursing bras in my size can be tricky.

    2) What you need to pay attention to is support. When it comes to nursing bras, a lot of LCs I know recommend avoiding underwire due to the fact that they CAN encouraged clogged ducts. But if you're large-chested, sometimes you NEED that underwire to help with support. If that's the case, you want a good-fitting underwire, something that doesn't leave red marks or impressions on you.

    3) Yes, sleep bras are a necessity in my opinion. I had 2 with my last 2 kids but I think this time I'll have 3 or 4 just so I don't have to do laundry so often.

    4) It was recommended to me to have 2 nursing bras and 2 sleep bras at delivery time, and then purchase more at 6 weeks postpartum when engorgement has subsided, your breasts are starting to be a more consistent size, etc.

    Hope these tips help!

  • I just bought a few different styles while nursing my son because I couldn't find that one that fit great. I ended up liking no wires with a lot of stretch...basically sports bras. I had to sleep with something to hold pads in place because I always leaked so much at night. This time I bought a few different styles of wireless and one "normal/sexy" bra because honestly I felt so unattractive never wearing anything but the sporty look.
  • Another FTM jumping in here. I think I saw you should buy nursing bras 2 sizes later than normal. Is this correct? I feel like it's hard to buy bras now when I don't know what size I'll end up needing
  • FTM here as well! And I have tried different ones on AND I think wireless all the way! Unless you need the support :) my cousin just gave birth and recommends sport bras style :D

The recommendation tends to be to be fitted around 36 weeks and go up one cup size (so if you're measuring a 40C, get a 40D). But then, like I said, at 6 weeks go with whatever size you're wearing at that point.
