Pitting edema

Any moms experiencing this?  I am now on insulin for my GD as of yesterday, and as of yesterday I am having pitting edema in my legs and my face and fingers are swollen as well.  My BP was elevated yesterday at my endocrinologist visit, and I was told to watch it.  It was 150/88 all this morning, but after lunch is down to 128/78.  Is it possible I'm developing Pre-eclampsia as well as the GD?  I know my doctor has me watching my BP because it's more likely to develop in women with GD (or so they said).  Of course the doctors office is closed on Wednesdays so I left a message for the on-call to call me back.  At what point do I need to start worrying about this?  The edema is horrible.  It takes over a minute for my leg to go back to normal if I push it down.  I am NOT used to this kind of stuff, as my previous 3 pregnancies all went fine.  Any advice ladies?  You've always helped me out so much in the past...

Re: Pitting edema

  • Not to raise the alarms but that sounds like exactly what happened to my mom with her last child. She had developed GD, BP started to get crazy paired with edema, and next thing we knew she had pre-eclempsia. Take it easy, drink lots of water, and good luck! The good news is they're aware of all this and you're being proactive so it'll be manageable.

  • IMO, you should be mindful of this and  make sure to get in touch with your care provider as soon as you can. They will know for sure when/if additional steps needs to be taken. Let them know if you have any headaches, vision changes, fever, sudden vomiting or abdominal pain. It is possible to develop PE as well as GD so you should keep an eye on any other symptoms that accompany PE besides edema.

While you are waiting for a call back from the doc, make sure you are resting and getting plenty of fluids (even though it seems counter intuitive with the edema). I see you have 3 little ones already so it might be tough to get to take a break with your feet up but do your best to try!

    Good luck and best wishes!
  • pitting edema is never a good sign.  Is the swelling going down with elevation and rest?  That is a more positive sign as we will all most likely swell with the heat and pregnancy.  If it is pitting and it is hard to get the edema to reduce, then you do need to see your dr.  they will most likely check your urine for protein to see about pre-e.  I hope you don't have it and I am sorry you are going through this.  It seems like you have had to face a lot during this pregnancy what with illness and listeria and GD, I am sorry it has been such a bumpy road!  many thoughts and prayers that everything is okay, and keep us update!!!

  • I have zero experience with any of that but I would certainly be putting a call into your doctor. I think with everything combined going on, it's good to tread cautiously. Please keep us updated.

That's exactly how I feel!  I told DH that if he had any second thoughts about this being our last, he was nuts and could find someone else to have the baby...this pregnancy has NOT been friendly to me at ALL!!

I am still waiting on the doc to call back, but there has been no decrease is swelling so far.  But, I'm also back to work and even though I sit most of the time, it's not helping any.  I'm hoping to just go lay down after work tonight.  Fingers crossed DH and DD find something for supper, as both my DS's are at their fathers house for his visitation night.  Knowing my luck...it'll be back to L&D again for more monitoring.  Did I mention how over this pregnancy I am?  LOL

  • @jessandandy09, I'm thinking cereal sounds pretty amazing at the moment!  LOL  And yes, we are finally out of the flooding for this week/weekend, but it looks like more heavy rain next week, which could throw us back into flooding because the rivers are still over flowing.

  • Yuck, you are fighting a battle from outside and within this pregnancy.    I hope you don't have to face more flooding, FXFY that the rain will sweep by and leave you able to get out if you need to get to your Dr.'s.

Def hope you hear back from doc. I've had putting edema occasionally since week 30 around my feet but it's the face and hands that is cause for alarm. Good luck!
  • Hope the dr calls you back soon! I have pre-e and was told to call immediately if swelling was sudden and severe. Wishing you luck! Keep us posted!
  • They finally called back, my doc wasn't the on-call. Ugh! So, the lady who called said that since it started yesterday it's not considered "sudden" onset. I tried explaining that it started suddenly yesterday. She asked me what my BP is, I told her and she said I should be safe tonight and just rest and call for my regular doc tomorrow. I'm pretty diligently watching my BP and plan to take pics in the morning to send to my doc of the edema since he knows what my legs normally look like. Lol

  • @chavemann10 did you get to speak with your own doc today? I hope everything is ok!
  • Sorry, yes I spoke with him. He said to keep an eye on it. I sent him pictures and he told me to lay down as soon as I got home and prop my feet up. If it's not down by the morning, I'm to stay in bed and call him. I may or may not end up in L&D tomorrow.

I sit at work all day as well and it is horrible! I recently took a week off from work when my mom came to visit and we spent our time grocery shopping, cooking, and then shopping for baby. I had a little swelling then, but it was nothing compared to this week back at work. I did notice that if I walk on my lunch break it helps the swelling go down in the evenings. Are you be able to walk a little throughout the day? Would something like compression hose help?

  • @shmarpler,  unfortunately walking doesn't help at all.  I'm actually thinking it makes it worse.  My doc said as long as I'm not having higher blood pressures and my protein sticks are showing negative, I'll be able to wait until this friday to see him.
