Weight Gain

I am 6 weeks and have already gained 4 pounds. That may not seem like a lot, but my stomache is completely bloated. I am eating the same, if not more healthier, than before the pregnancy. Nothing has really changed. I have not had morning sickness yet, so no food cravings or aversions. Has anyone else gained weight yet?

Re: Weight Gain

  • My advise would be to stop weighing yourself now and limit it to doctor check ups. Here's the thing... Some women will gain very little and some will gain 40-60 lbs, possibly more. I'm not saying one is better or worse than the other but I do know that when we start comparing weight gain or lack thereof people are bound to start feeling bad because they assume they are gaining too much or too little. PLUS you will feel liberated if you free yourself of the scale for the next nine months too ;) the average person gains anywhere from 25-35 lbs during pregnancy ( only about 7 lbs is the actual baby) the rest is excess blood and fat and fluids in your body as well as the growing placenta.

I think your gain is probably related to the bloating you mentioned, retained water etc. sounds totally normal. I wouldn't worry about it ;)

  • Constipation + excess water will add 4 pounds easy.

As long as you're eating healthily, you're not going to be able to control the rest of the weight gain, so don't freak out about it to much. Focus on your actions, not the number on the scale.
  • What pp said. Try more to focus on the healthy eating you've been working on and let the doc talk to you about weight. It's going to fluctuate some, especially with the bloating.

Also, to try to combat bloating, make sure you're drinking plenty of water. Watch how much salt you use. And it's always good to stay mildly active to encourage any fluids in your tissues to migrate into your vascular system where you can pee it out. Make sure you eat a healthy portion of protein to keep your system well balanced.

  • They say the bloat is normal. Your body relaxes more now and the bloat can be more obvious as something with the digestive track causing more gas. Just eat right and soon you'll be popping anyway

  • This is my third pregnancy, and I've always gained 5 pounds in the first trimester, pretty much right off the bat (while lots of other women seem to stay the same or talk about how they're worried about their weight loss)  I feel like it's a hormonal, "Okay. You're pregnant. Let's do this." five pounds, and then I don't start really gaining until 2nd tri.  Especially if you tend toward being thinner, your body just needs to do what it needs to do.  Don't sweat it, it doesn't mean you're going to continue gaining 4 pounds a week;)

  • It's probably bloat. I lost 4 lbs last week and gained it back (in bloat) this week. Try drinking lots of water and eating fibrous foods. Other than that, just eat healthily and get some exercise (even just walking a bit every day).

  • in a week I've gained 3 pounds..

I'm blaming the water. I've increased my water. from drinking close to nothing to like 64oz
  • Girl! I'm right there with you. This is baby #3 for me and in every pregnancy I've gained 50-70 pounds. I usually start showing pretty early on. I blame genetics and constipation! I have a way healthier lifestyle with this pregnancy, workout and eat healthier than with my other 2 but somehow I'm crazy bloated and have gained about 4 lbs. Hang in there!
