NICU moms - going home without baby

Has anyone had to leave your new baby in the nicu and headed home already? Any coping suggestions? About to leave our premie and it's starting to be real.

Re: NICU moms - going home without baby

  • #2 came home with us but the next day he was in a Nicu 2hrs away for a month. I honestly don't have any suggestions other than visit often and use this time to take care of yourself.

Since my guy was two hours away I couldn't be there everyday so I spend my days doing anything I could find to keep myself busy.

  • My brother and I were in the PICU and NICU, I was in there for about 2 1/2 months and my brother in there for almost 2 months. I spoke to my mom and dad on how they handled it because I was worried about our little one. My mom basically said that she spent a lot of time talking with us and reading to us :D she couldn't make it every day BUT whenever she went she always brought things from home to make us feel at home and also sang to us. She did have postpartum depression wifh both of us since she couldn't hold us right after and she also couldn't breast feed any of us. But she said that my dad was her greatest support system and they took it day by day. :) it's always hard when you can't bring your little one home with you and you have to leave especially when you just got him/her. But know that your baby is in good hands and you will see your baby soon :D
  • My first was born at 29 weeks and spent 2.5 months in NICU. We lived only a 2 minute drive from the hospital and would visit most every day. I feel horrible for saying this but I didn't have a very strong connection to him.. I was so unprepared having him, didn't get to hold or breast feed him to bond. When you visit I suggest keeping a journal and write in it each day you're there with his progression, what you did while there, etc. We did it with our son and it's been nice to go back and read (I think he'll enjoy reading it too someday). Sing songs and just enjoy your time when you are there. Take pictures to post around your house if that helps. Good luck!!
