Severe hip pain!

I am 16 weeks and I have been having severe hip pain in both hips. Sometimes it's so bad I cannot walk. Is this normal?

Re: Severe hip pain!

  • can't tell you if it's normal, but I definitely have the same thing, only in my left hip though--shooting pains! 16 weeks tomorrow.

  • I'm the same way. I've been thinking about seeing a chiropractor. 15 weeks and 1 day here. My hips have been killing me especially my left one (may have to do with a car accident I was in less than a year ago) since about 10 weeks.

Mine is just my left hip too! But omg! I limp sometimes because it gets so bad! I think for me more so because I sleep and usually lean more on that side. Hope you ladies get pain free soon!
  • Left side here too and I'm 16 weeks! I'm detecting a pattern, ladies!
  • I've been having occasional severe left hip pain as well which seems to be consistent with the symptoms of sciatica. It would make sense with the additional weight & pressure being put on the spine with the pregnancy.
Definitely no fun, but I know he/she will be worth it! :)
  • My doctor told me mine was likely due to sacroiliac joint pain and that there are a few exercises I could try. I hope they help! I hope you find a way to help be a little more comfortable.
  • I'm having the same. I think it's because I'm sleeping on my side now (previously a stomach sleeper).
  • Could it be SPD? Might want to look into that. You can get a belt to help things a little bit.
  • I feel you. My hips have been SO achey, especially at night. I feel like my legs are going to fall off! I might cave & buy a pregnancy pillow, because I've heard they help with this type of pain.

  • My left hip is absolutely killing me today! I just want someone to carve it out with a spoon! Take away the whole joint! I want to put heat on it...but worried it may heat my insides up too much.
  • I had it last pregnancy and it's here again. I think it's the unfortunate result of all those ligament relaxing hormones.
  • I've had this on and off too. My doc has let me use biofreeze on it when I need to and that has really helped.
  • I had the same issue and narrowed it down to sleeping on a firm mattress. Try putting some soft blankets under your hips and see if that helps. A lot of walking also helps.
  • I am definitely experiencing the same thing! I used to be a gymnast and my doctor told me that can contribute to the pain because my joints are overworked as is.

Talk to your doctor. I've been having right hip pain that wakes me up at night. She says it's musculoskeletal due to pregnancy and is sending me to physical therapy, she wants me to address it now before it gets worse. Not excited about it, but at least I can prevent more problems.

I have left hip pain too.
  • I had horrible hip pain with my first pregnancy (can't remember exactly when it started). It was mostly at night. Tried to use a preggie pillow but didn't like it. I ended up layering a bunch of pillows behind me to make a wedge and slept on my back at an incline. It helped a lot.
  • My hips have been hurting since 6 weeks can't even put pants on by myself calling a chiropractor in the am
  • I have been seeing a chiropractor for my hip pain. I'm 17 weeks now and have had it since 13 weeks. She said because my joints and muscles are getting ready for delivery, my hip shifted. It was so painful. I couldn't do anything but stand up straight. And kind of bend or twist brought me to tears. Now I still feel some discomfort/pain but nowhere near the level of pain it started as.
  • Prenatal yoga helps a TON with hip pain (at least for me). The other thing that I've found to be helpful is sleeping with a pillow between my knees.
  • 18.5 weeks and both hips ache but the left one is way worse!! Heating pad and pillow between the knees while sleeping helps. Could a chiropractor help too?
  • Sleeping on my side with a pillow between my knees helps my hip pain too.

  • I get awful SI pain accompanied by right hip pain. My OB sent me to physical therapy because it was affecting me at work. I have a support belt for work since I'm a nurse and am on my feet a lot. But my hip pain is bad at night. I toss and turn because I can't find a comfortable way to sleep. My physical therapist suggested icing for 10 minutes before I go to bed.

Update -Physical therapist says my rt. hip pain is caused by tilted pelvis and my right leg was actually getting shorter! :( she and i are doing exercises now to get my pelvis and muscles back in alignment. So glad that i went to PT, if you are having same issues, you might want to check it out - i wouldnt have wanted to catch this any later.
  • The body pillow I bought at Kohl's for only $9.99 is my new best friend. Seriously ladies... get one!!
