So I'm a FTM and I feel silly asking, but my friend was saying that when she was pregnant, she didn't use any smelly lotions or spray because of chemicals in them. Should I be avoiding them too?
Not pregnant lurker. I never changed my beauty routine. The only thing you should avoid in retin A. Plus, everything has chemicals on them. Water is a chemical.
I just avoided things that had acne medication last time and shampoos with sulfate's. Otherwise I didn't change much. I don't think lotion that smells good is bad for you just because it smells nice.
I've been trying to "green" up my beauty products for several years now independent of pregnancy. If you're interested in learning about the chemical composition of your beauty products, there's a great resource in:
That being said, they can be a bit alarmist and over the top (especially with some of their articles, so I only use it for the product database).
Overall though, @PugsandKisses is right, there is very little you should actually avoid. In addition to Retin-A, I've also read that you should avoid products that contain salicylic acid (found in many acne-fighting products), but it's less of a concern than Retin-A.
I cut back but more so due to my inability to handle anything scented. I ended up making everyone in my house start using my shampoo because it was the only smell that didn't make me gag.
