sciatic pain....

This is my third pregnancy but first time having to deal with this... all I've got to say is its horrible! I have 13 weeks left idk how I'm gonna make it. I take baths and use a heating pad once in a while when it's real bad. Anyone else dealing with sciatic nerve pain or have in the past and have tips?

Re: sciatic pain....

  • Yep. Dealt with it in my first pregnancy and this one. It started around 14ish weeks for both. I have good days and bad days....but those bad days? My God. It doesn't help that I have a very strenuous job and hobby. Honestly, I don't have any tips other than the maternity belt (relieves some pressure) and hot showers (I can't do baths).

    We're almost there!!

  • I went to the chiropractor for mine. Helped me a lot. My midwife also showed me stretches that helped.

Yoga! This is my first pregnancy and I've had sciatic pain since week 10 :( It comes and goes, some days are worse than others. I'm at the point now where my right upper thigh is "asleep" to varying degrees most of the time. But, yoga does seem to help. It alleviates some pressure and stretches out those tight back muscles. A pigeon pose is helpful, along with other hip openers. I have some others yoga stretches in a PDF if you are interested...I'm going to try to attach it. Best of luck! :)
  • I have the same problem. Most days my hip/leg is numb. On the bad days I use an ice pack and take some Tylenol to take the edge off the pain. Sometimes I will alternate between using the ice pack and heating pad. I also do some stretches- pelvic tilts. The pain is getting progressively worse so I'm going to ask my doc for more tips when I go in this week.

    Chiropractor!!
  • I had sciatica before I got pregnant. I had a bad injury when I was younger and my sciatic nerve has been pinched ever since... Along with the degerative discs, Lupus, and Fibromyalgia my back has been bad. And of course , I am not on any of my meds for the pain so my sciatica is unbareable... It even hurts when I am laying in bed (which is why I'm up now...lol) and when I stand I can only stand for a few minutes at a time without it burning... So I feel ya honey... I use ice and Tylenol when I can't stand it any more... You are not alone!!! Feel better!!!
  • I had mild sciatica before I got pregnant, but around 12-14 weeks it started to get worse and eventually became unbearable.  My OB sent me to the chiropractor.  I now go twice a week and the pain is down to a 2-4 from an 8-10.  Some days are worse than others, but I can't imagine how I would feel without these past weeks at the chiropractor.  I was also instructed to sit on a physioball chair instead of the regular chair I have at work.  It was not the greatest at first, but it is a whole lot more comfortable and I have less pain at the end of the day.
  • Physical therapy exercises are a godsend!  My sciatica got so bad last pregnancy I didn't think I would be able to walk for the last 3 months.   PT solved it!  I still do them and Yoga stretches too.

  • Find a DO or PT that will perform the Jones strain/counterstrain of the piriformis muscle. Massage therapists and some chiropractors should know it, too. That is the one thing that made a noticeable difference and I went from nearest to back to the gym in 3 days after having it.
  • Thanks everyone! I'm gonna talk to some of the PTs at work and see what they suggest!
  • I have been having sciatic pain now for about 3 weeks now. The doctor finally gave me some strong Tylenol with Codeine that helps a bit and I have been going to PT as well. I added in chiropractor (he specializes in Prenatal) and that has REALLY HELPED. I am also seeing a massage therapist and doing Yoga. Together they help, so far the chiropractor has been the best! I am getting acupuncture this week and hoping that will help as well.

    Good luck with the pain!
