February 2016 Moms

I'm a little rusty.

So this is my second pregnancy - I have a DD that is five, so combine that with just not remembering the process completely... But will I get an ultrasound done on my first visit? I'll be 6 weeks and 2 days by that point (June 15th). I know the heartbeat will be a long shot that early, but I really just want to make sure this sweet babe is forming just right. :)

I'm fully aware that I will be drained of my blood supply for testing but other than that I'm not sure what all they will do that early.

Re: I'm a little rusty.

  • They might do one. I think it just depends on your doctor and insurance. With DS I went in and got an ultrasound at 7 weeks We were able to catch the heartbeat at that time. This time around they have me going in just before 8 weeks for a prenatal chat with a nurse and then just after 8 weeks for my first ultrasound and meeting with me new OB.

I definitely didn't get an ultrasound my first appointment last time, and I was 8 weeks then. We just listened to the heartbeat. This time I'm going at almost 10 weeks and with a different doctor, so I'm not sure what to expect either!
  • For my first pregnancy they just did the initial exam and history. Then we scheduled my ultrasound for a few days later. That was around 9 weeks. This time around I have a different dr but it's going to be about the same i think. I have the first appointment at 10.5 weeks and then they will schedule my first ultrasound after that.

I think a lot of it depends on how confident they are with your due date.  With DS, I got a positive pregnancy test on CD55 (but I knew my O date), so despite the fact that I could tell them how far along I was, they wanted to confirm things.  If you have regular cycles, it's probably not as much of an issue and they wouldn't really have a reason to do so.

ETA: though it seems to be very OB-dependent.  In researching new practices, I've found some that make an u/s a regular thing at their intake appointment.

  • I had ultrasounds at initial appts for my first two, but they tried to make sure to make the appt around 7wks. I always ovulated late, and mine were always too early, so I would end up having two ultrasounds within 1-2weeks of each other. This time, seems like the same story. My first ultrasound/appt is at 6w2d. I'm contemplating calling tomorrow, though, and asking to just do bloodwork, and to push back the u/s in hopes of seeing more.

  • You should be able to see a heartbeat if you really are 6 weeks, assuming you know when you ovulated. 6 weeks is when the heart starts beating. You can probably get an US if you ask for one, insurance may not cover it however.

I was a chronic charter before my BFP - so I am fairly positive of when I ovulated. I just want to confirm with something visual. :)
  • With my last pregnancy I didn't get to hear the heartbeat till 8 weeks and didn't have an u/s till 19 weeks at my Anatomy scan but every doctor is different.
