Are you using a mobile?

It is kind of an afterthought for me. We didn't get a bedding set, and I can not find one that really goes with the decor of the room. How important is a mobile? Does the baby really enjoy it? Since we will be using a bassinet for the first few months, I have some time to decide, but I don't know if it is something that I find necessary.

Re: Are you using a mobile?

  • We aren't using a mobile because I read for safety reasons you should only use one until baby can push up on its arms. Just seemed like a waste of money to me when she'll be in a bassinet the first 2 months.

  • Our Pack n Play came with one when we bought it for my first child.  For this child, we have a Star Wars themed nursery so I clipped the original animals that used to dangle from the mobile and put on characters from Star Wars instead.  It's turned out to be adorable!  Yoda, Chewie and R2-D2 are going to be floating above my baby's head.  For safety reasons, once our little one can pull himself up, we'll just remove the mobile and he can play with the little figures (strings removed of course).

I can imagine that it's something interesting for the baby to look at and can stimulate the brain.  I don't think it's a necessity though as there are plenty of other things to look at and see for the baby.  Hope this helps!
  • My best friend bought one for us so we'll be using one for a bit but otherwise I would have only bought one if I saw one I absolutely loved.
  • They say babies respond well to mobiles with black and white images really early on for some reason, and then to more colorful, complex ones at 3-6 months. But as a pp said, they also recommend not having one once the baby can raise him/herself up. I got a handmade, beautiful one from Etsy, but haven't put it up yet. I'm wondering if maybe I should just suspend it from the ceiling for decoration or something.
  • We got one from our shower but I don't think we will use it
  • I don't think there important at all! I mean baby can't even see for a few months. When there older and don't pass out every 5 minutes, then I used them.. But my daughters were more entertained with the light thing.. Oh crap what's it called? It's a little TV looking type thing? Fisher price.. Lol whatever it's called. They loved them. But I really only got the mobile because it looked cute and I thought they needed it.
  • I had one for my son but I don't think he was ever that interested in it...don't have one for baby girl so I may just skip it.
  • We didn't buy one. For me it was an unnecessary purchase. I have a soothing sound machine
  • We got one because it was cute. Unfortunitly the motor is obnoxiously loud and seems to defeat the purpose. I'm a light sleeper and as he will be sleeping in our room I can't see us using it much if at all.
  • The lullaby was more important than the actual mobile. (Esp in the beginning) but he did stare at it when falling asleep around 3 months or so. It was worth it for us. Think we left it on for quite a while... thing was pretty solid if you tried to pull on it but he never messed with it. I wanna say we left it on until he was a year olds or so. We'll be doing the same for this baby, following his cues.

  • I never bought one for my son and didn't get one this time around either. Just never see me like a necessity to me.
  • I've never had one. I don't get what they're for. I don't think I need one. And I'm thinking they're just for looks.

  • We're doing an etsy one and hanging from the ceiling out of reach. We also got a lady bug that will play music and project stars on the ceiling as a gift from as friend whose son had the turtle version and loved it.
  • I am making one since our theme is not something easy to find. It will hang from the ceiling out of reach as well. I definitely want some sort of lullaby thing to keep the LO content.
  • We hung prism crystals from the window of the nursery.  She'll be in our room with us at first.  When she moves to the nursery, she can watch the rainbows dance across the ceiling and walls.
  • It helps the baby learn how to focus and provides stimulation for vision and brain development. As far as absolutely needing one, no it's not really a necessity so don't stress, but babies are born with 20/400 vision and your voice, vivid colors and music help babies' vision and focus develop- so a mobile above them to look at when they are going to sleep and when they wake up is actually a good thing. Our bassinet has a little one attached and we have one we plan to get when he moves to his crib/nursery. Also, babies like routine, so when you're sleep or crib training, putting them down and turning on a music/light show and giving them a mobile to look at can be very helpful for soothing and calming them and setting that routine for them.
