I've had heartburn my entire pregnancy as I did with DD my first pregnancy. I've had acid reflux since birth so unfortunately that continues and worsens in pregnancy.. Fun fact: studies have shown that in pregnant women, high levels of estrogen and other hormones can relax the sphincter at the bottom of the esophagus, causing heartburn. The same hormones, other studies show, can influence fetal hair growth. Anywho, I take Prilosec OTC and popping tums and papaya enzyme. Some think tums causes problems in pregnancy so I tried a more natural remedy but sometimes it gets so bad that papaya enzymes and milk don't help so I have to pop tums
OMG I FEEL YOUR PAIN!! I just started having the worst heartburn! I can't sleep at night, no matter what I eat it happens. And if it's not heartburn it's an upset stomach. I'm 28 weeks and I know my little man needs more time to "cook" but I'm already sooo anxious to have him out! Tums works for about 5 mins.
Try a tablespoon of Apple Cider Vinegar followed immediately by water - drink the water until the burning subsides. It has been a miracle worker for me!
I got a wedge pillow from Bed, Bath, and Beyond. It's not super comfortable, but I don't wake up in the middle of the night feeling like I chugged bleach anymore! I've also been eating Tums. Does anyone know why the directions say you're suppose to eat fewer of them if you're pregnant?

Months ago I saw a post by someone who said their DS had a bone disorder (I believe that is what it was) from her consuming too many during pregnancy. I have tried to limit how many I have now. I believe she said DS is fine now but had to see a lot of specialists, etc....I forget the details other than Tums were the cause.

My MW said they can cause calcium deposits on the placenta. I didn't research the issue, but I would think if that were the case, it could very well interfere with baby's nutrition, etc.
I've had problems with heartburn even prior to pregnancy, but is has definitely gotten much worse! I can't eat any processed meats or bread, unless it is sourdough. Probiotics, papaya enzymes, and apple cider vinegar all help. I found that if I put a tsp of ACV in a shot glass and fill the glass the rest of the way with water and drink it before each meal, I am MUCH more comfortable, and don't wake up feeling like I drank bleach, or have to spend my night sitting up in bed.
So I'm going against what majority of people say with this but, sleep on your right side. Left is better for blood flow and what not but sleeping on your right keeps the heart burn from getting able to come up (it's the positioning of the stomach) Try to sleep elevated. Sometimes a room temperature coke can help (don't chug) and sitting straight up. If that stuff doesn't work with added meds I dint know what to tell ya

Left is actually better for this. That is why in CPR/First Aid they teach to put someone in the recovery position on their left side to help prevent them from vomitting.

Exactly. My acid reflux is bad. If I eat and lay on my right side I'll throw up. If I lay on my left side then I feel better.
Re: extreme heartburn
My doctor told me to take Zantac and it actually has been working pretty good. If the old wives tale is true, my baby is going to look like this...

Chewing mint gum also helps.
