Breastmilk storage

Heya, just wondering if any one knows if you can bring BM to temperature from the fridge and refridgerate what hasn't been used? Or can I just leave it out to e used on our next feed (3hrly)

We are BF with expressed top ups due to LO's jaundice, slowly reducing expressed feeds.

Re: Breastmilk storage

  • I have been leaving some out after I pump. It is good for 5 hrs at room temp. If I refrigerate it, it is only good for 5 days but I usually warm it up in warm water. Sometimes I let it warm up to room temp but not sure if we are supposed to do that. Asking a lc would be a good idea.

  • I'm sure there are food safety guidelines, but we would do exactly what you described for DS. We also found at about 2 months, he would take cold milk so we stopped warming it altogether.
  • Thanks for your help. I just spoke to the bfing hotline, they said that once u defrost/warm up BM the cautious recommendation says you should bin what isn't used because quality is reduced/potential bacterias.

They also did say if LO feeds from the bottle with the milk and doesn't finish what is in there in that feed, you bin the remaining milk as their saliva has gone back into the milk quality is reduced/potential bacterias.

So we will start just putting 10ml in a btl and top up 10ml at a time.

She did say this was the overly cautious approach that they recommend though
