Suboptimal views on ultrasound??

Hi ladies! Has anyone had to go for a 2nd ultrasound because of suboptimal views?!? I went for my 20 week ultrasound on Wednesday and they are sending me for another one on Tuesday saying that the reason was suboptimal views?? I'm not really sure what that means! Almost everything came back normal except there were a few things that they had under undetermined category. I didn't see my normal doctor, I was scheduled to see a different doctor, my office was you to see a few, but she ended up getting called into delivery and I ended up seeing a midwife. She was really nice but didn't really explain much. I'm excited to see my little peanut again but I'm hoping everything's okay!

Sounds like they just didnt get all the images they needed, happens quite frequently! Babies dont exactly move exactly when you want them to for an ultrasound, so your little one might just have been in a position that meant the tech couldnt see quite everything they want to see (which is a lot!!). I've read a lot of ladies here needing to go for another one because of that, its nothing to worry about.

  • I had this- went on Tuesday and they couldn't get enough images of the heart and chin! Haha the chin looked normal in the last ultrasound so not sure what's happening. I go again tomorrow so hopefully baby won't be stubborn again. I was rolling from side to side, lying on my stomach for a while, jumping up and down and still babe wouldn't move. I was told to eat/drink lots of sugar before my scan so baby will be a bit more active for the tech.
  • Yes mine was of the heart too! It makes me nervous, I wish it was something other than the heart! I was supposed to go back in two weeks then the nurse called and said there no point in waiting and to go on Tuesday. I was 20 weeks and 6 days at the ultrasound so I will be 21 weeks and 5 days when I go back for my 2nd ultrasound. I guess I'm just nervous that they want me to go back sooner now. I keep saying to my husband why couldn't it be a leg that they couldn't see, why did it have to be the heart?!? I just want it to be Tuesday so I can see what's going on!
  • Baby was probably 8n a bad position to get the pictures they needed. For example, my baby was laying on her back so the couldn't see the spine or kidneys and had to do a second ultrasound.
  • I have to go back in 2 weeks for another ultrasound. They didn't have good images of the heart. All of my ultrasounds are at the maternal fetal medicine specialist's office. I was told do not worry baby just wasn't in great position for good pictures of his heart and she wants to be able to give me an answer with confidence. Everything else looked great so I'm not worried. I had drank cranapple juice prior and baby was all over the place.
  • I wouldn't worry yet. My friend had to go back to see her baby's chin .
  • @gatorgrad2007 they are sending me to a maternal fetal medicine place for this ultrasound, I think it is part of the hospital that my doctors office is in. It's only a few miles down the road. I'm wondering if they just have better ultrasound machines. I'm trying not to worry, they said everything else was great and her heart rate was 162.

Thank you ladies for all your support! I'm definitely not as worried after hearing from you all!
  • when I went to my 19 weeks anatomy scan they told me that they couldn't get all the pictures because of the position of the baby. 10 days later I had to go back for an anatomy scan again. After that they were still not satisfied of the views they going of the heart so I was sent to have a fetal echo done at 22 weeks. After that last appointment they have concluded that everything is perfectly fine they have gotten all the pictures of the baby that they wanted. Baby is in the position where the spine is facing out so it was hard for them to get good views of everything.
  • My lil guy was hiding behind my belly button so the tech wasn't able to get a lot of the measurements needed (@ 19wks)
Doc wants me to get another ultrasound at 24wks (next week).
I'm excited to see the little fella again!
I hope everything goes well with your appt! :)
  • Thanks everyone! I'm not at nervous now! I can't wait to see my little girl again tomorrow. I will update after my appointment!
  • I just had my on Wed. at 20 wks, and baby girl would not cooperate at all, they only got half the pictures they needed. So I go back in a few weeks at 24 wks to try again. Try not to worry! It's normal! :)

  • @kellymarie329 try not to worry. The Maternal fetal medicine doctors have much better ultrasound machines. The place I go to the doctor comes in the room and looks over everything as soon as the tech is done getting the images. My doctor told me it was common to not get clear pics of everything because baby is still pretty small and can be down low with a lot of places to hide. I was 19w2d at the time of my A/S and 21w4d now. I go to a mtm every 4-6 weeks to be monitored because I have fibroids, and to be honest I like them better than my obgyn that will deliver me. My doctor wasn't concerned at all and said at my next routine visit in 4-6 weeks we should be able to get the better images that she wants of his heart, and that everything else looks great. Keep us posted praying all is well for you!
  • Yup, nothing to worry about.  My little boy wouldn't sit still for anything at my 20 week scan.  I'm going back at 23 1/2 weeks for another lookie loo.  They couldn't see his heart either.  Just being difficult!

  • I went into today for my 2nd ultrasound, they said she looks good and she's even gained weight since last week! The doctor did mention that my amniotic fluid is at the lower end of the normal scale and would like to see me back in a few weeks. I am trying to stay positive, but it is hard. I am hoping by increasing my fluids intake will help. She said if it stays at the level it's at there is no concern but if it drops then further treatment is required. Hoping everything looks good when we go back for another check.
