Pink Formula/Bottle Phenomenon

I am not going to lie, this one has me worried..

Today I was cleaning the house and found a bottle that had been sitting around probably a day and somehow got missed (not rinsed out). It was hot pink! The milk residue on the bottom, sides, and nipple where all pink.

I immediately googled this to see if it was normal.. Who knows, maybe they put something in it to turn pink after it spoils.. Not sure. While many people apparently also have experienced this, no one could for sure say why. Some suggested it was due to a bacteria the baby could have that is mixing with the formula (back wash). This bacteria can doing everything from absolutely nothing to cause meningitis and death!! I was freaking out.

I immediately called the pediatricians office but of course, being a Saturday, I could only talk with a nurse. She said she has no idea what I am talking about and totally blew it off. Said maybe it was the detergent residue from my dish washer.

That answer just does not sit well with me so I am hoping one of yogu may have experienced this before and can offer advice. LO is just shy of 6 weeks, is growing like a weed, no fever or problems eating. She has been VERY fussy lately but after our one month check up a few days ago, ruled that to be reflux and gas issues..

Any advice.. Anyone?? Please help calm a FTM's mind.

  • Now that I think about it.. There were others in the sink too that weren't pink. I wonder if it is something with that ONE bottle. Luckily I set it aside so I know which one it is (hoping the pediatrician will culture it) but I think I will boil the rest of them just to be safe.

It's due to S marcescens,an airborne bacteria. I doubt u will find it in clean bottle or refrigerated milk. Hence the need to throw away unfinished milk after 2hrs. I am sure your LO is fine.
  • Do you live in a new build or renovated house? We wet surfaces in our new house turn kind of pink. My research has also led to an airborne bacteria as mentioned.
  • No, not new or l renovated. We have lived here for 1.5 years and it was built in the 70's. Just to be safe I am sterilizing all of her bottles more often than I was. I am still nervous she might get sick.
