Itchy Skin !

I'm 34 weeks along and over the past few days my arms have been extremely itchy. Anyone know what causes itchy skin ? It's very annoying to constantly have a itch

Re: Itchy Skin !

  • Not saying this is what you have. But a couple weeks ago I mentioned it to my OB about my itchy skin- on my neck and all over my body especially at night- and I'm in the process of having my blood work tested for gall bladder blockage which causes bike acids (or maybe it's enzymes) to build up in your system. Anyways. I could possibly have to deliver @37 weeks if the tests come back positive. Talk to your OB. I thought it was nothing too until I mentioned it to her.

Thoughts for you to relive the itch!!

I don't know if the above post is referencing the same medical problem but itchy skin is a major symptom of cholestasis (not sure if I spelled that correctly). Call your doctor at some point.

Yes. Thank you. Was forgetting the name.

  • My skin gets itchy too, but only after I shower. It eventually goes away, but those first moments after I shower and dress are horrible! I think my case is just a common pregnancy symptom though.
  • Yeeessssss mention it to your doctor so they can run tests, I had the same problem a couple of weeks ago and after having my blood work results back they determined I have Cholestasis of pregnancy and they started me off medication ASAP as well as having me go frequently baby monitoring just to make sure baby is not under any stress, I'm not saying you have the same issue but it wouldn't hurt to get checked. Just to be in the safe side. Best of luck to you and your baby.
  • There are so many fun skin issues than can come with pregnancy it's best if it's really bugging you to talk to your dr. It could be dry skin or cholestasis. Also a fun thing called pupps but that normally has a fun rash with it.

I have extremely itchy skin as well. Was tested for cholestasis, but results came back clean. I have pretty sensitive skin anyway so I'm chalking it up to pregnancy exacerbating everything, including allergic reactions. But, it's better to check with your dr because cholestasis is not something that should be left untreated.
  • I am also in the process of having my bile and liver enzymes checked for the same reason. It is called choleostasis. So yes mention it to your doctor. My enzymes came back through the roof so the doctor is running s few more tests because liver enzymes can be higher when pregnant because of the placenta. I'm having twins so I have two placentas so that is why she's checking into it for me further. But I haven't heard about the bile yet. And yes if you have this it is recommended to deliver at 37 weeks. It isn't a lasting condition and won't affect you or baby after your pregnancy. It is something that can happen during pregnancy and there isn't a known cause for it.
  • Agree with pp's. Cholestasis can cause extreme itching, but I was told its generalized in your legs. But so can hormones. Dry skin, and extra blood flow... And can also be a sign of pre eclampsia.. So it can be many things. Try using some lotion, or Benadryl. And if neither work then see your doctor. Pregnancy causes lots of itching so try not to worry about it, but better safe then sorry.
That being said... I am itchy sometimes as well. (Had blood works and monitoring to know it's just pregnancy) and it's really annoying sometimes! Changing your detergent can help as well.. I like purex baby. It's what I use for the baby stuff, it smells good and it inexpensive ;)
