It's a winter squash, similar to butternut.
• I can't say I've ever come across this vegetable in Australia (or anywhere else I've lived for that matter). Must be a North American thing!
• I asked my dad, who is 59 and grew up on a farm as a child, and he said when he was a kid they were super trendy to start growing and using in all kinds of dishes. He said they look like a smaller green pumpkin. But as far as I know I have never seen them at whole foods or HEB.
• Maybe it's a midwestern thing? Pretty common here! I was wondering what a jackfruit was? I'm not there yet, but I see it on some timelines and I have NO idea what those are!

Acorn squash is delicious. Even just dicing it up and heating it on the stove with some olive oil and salt and pepper. Or you can roast it with some garlic. I am huge fan of any squash, my favorite being zucchini <3

Me too! I love all squash!

I love it with a little butter, pepper, cinnamon, brow sugar and a sausage stuffing mixture...

Just moved to nc and this past year is when I first tried it.

This sounds delicious!

• I've lived in 3 states in very different parts of the country and have had acorn squash in all of them, so I'm not sure about it being real regional - at least in the US... They usually sell them at Wal-Mart in season so they aren't real exotic. As others have said, its just a type of squash. We made one into french fries a couple weeks ago...
• Like @Lalala2326 mentioned, they can typically be found all over the U.S. I'm a military brat and I've seen them everywhere I've lived in the US. I will say that in my opinion they are disgusting. I'm not sure if it's the flavor or a weird texture but I don't like them.
• I live in Mexico and lived before in Europe and haven't seen them. Still Im not the typic veggies guy :P

• Thay make a killer pureed soup. More of a fall thing, but I made it as a first course for thanksgiving years ago and it blew my family away. Now it gets requested every year.

• @J&D2007 Jackfruit is super yummy! It's a fruit that's mostly found in tropical climate, and I've never seen it in the US. I grew up in India, where it's abundant, and it has a really sweet taste. Now I want some! :-)

And i agree with PPs, acorn squash makes a great soup!
• I second finding one ASAP, roasting it, and adding some butter and brown sugar. Yummmm

Very similar to what is known as a gem squash in other countries...very mild flavor and delicious baked with butter, salt, pepper, and garlic, with melted cheese on top. Love them - yum!
• Acorn squash and kabocha squash are probably my two favorite winter squashes. But I do love anything butternut too! Summer squashes are just typically too mushy for my taste, although sautéed with pasta and sausage is really yummy.

They are very common in New England!
• When I lived in South Africa we called them gem squash. I've lived in Texas for almost 14 years now & was very excited to find them at HEB. One of my favourite fall veggies!

@KerLyn09 - I am from South Africa too :) I have been here (New Jersey...currently) going on 12 years. Where in SA are you from?
• I love the Gem Squash name!!
I now want to eat it and make all the recipes you ladies have written!! Yummy in my tummy :D

Acorn Squash tastes a lot like a sweet potato or pumpkin in my opinion. They do make an excellent pureed soup. So does Butternut Squash. So yummy!
