This. Check out the winter squash section of the produce section of the grocery store. It's yummy and makes great soup and does look like a giant green acorn! All our babies are getting so big!
I asked my dad, who is 59 and grew up on a farm as a child, and he said when he was a kid they were super trendy to start growing and using in all kinds of dishes. He said they look like a smaller green pumpkin. But as far as I know I have never seen them at whole foods or HEB.
We actually eat them a lot. Mix in some other veggies and sausage!! They are a pretty good size, where a cucumber (30 weeks) isn't all that big, and then we jump to a pineapple? You're all over the place, bump!
Acorn squash is delicious. Even just dicing it up and heating it on the stove with some olive oil and salt and pepper. Or you can roast it with some garlic. I am huge fan of any squash, my favorite being zucchini
Maybe it's a midwestern thing? Pretty common here! I was wondering what a jackfruit was? I'm not there yet, but I see it on some timelines and I have NO idea what those are!

I've lived in 3 states in very different parts of the country and have had acorn squash in all of them, so I'm not sure about it being real regional - at least in the US... They usually sell them at Wal-Mart in season so they aren't real exotic. As others have said, its just a type of squash. We made one into french fries a couple weeks ago...
Like @Lalala2326 mentioned, they can typically be found all over the U.S. I'm a military brat and I've seen them everywhere I've lived in the US. I will say that in my opinion they are disgusting. I'm not sure if it's the flavor or a weird texture but I don't like them.
I like curried acorn squash soup with kale, and typically find it in the fall time. I like to buy a variety of squashes just for fall decorations and eventually turn them into dishes.
Acorn squash = sweet and savory squishy goodness. We hack them in half, scoop out the seeds, put a pat of butter, brown sugar, salt and pepper, and bake for 45 minutes. SO DELICIOUS aaaaand nutritious!!
Thay make a killer pureed soup. More of a fall thing, but I made it as a first course for thanksgiving years ago and it blew my family away. Now it gets requested every year.
@J&D2007 Jackfruit is super yummy! It's a fruit that's mostly found in tropical climate, and I've never seen it in the US. I grew up in India, where it's abundant, and it has a really sweet taste. Now I want some! :-)
And i agree with PPs, acorn squash makes a great soup!
Very similar to what is known as a gem squash in other countries...very mild flavor and delicious baked with butter, salt, pepper, and garlic, with melted cheese on top. Love them - yum!
Acorn squash and kabocha squash are probably my two favorite winter squashes. But I do love anything butternut too! Summer squashes are just typically too mushy for my taste, although sautéed with pasta and sausage is really yummy.
When I lived in South Africa we called them gem squash. I've lived in Texas for almost 14 years now & was very excited to find them at HEB. One of my favourite fall veggies!
