im just wondering what people's thoughts are on the minimum amount of baby clothes I will need. I plan on buying footed pjs, onesies, and pants if this helps. I am a sahm with easy access to laundry. I just don't want to go overboard with baby clothes. Thanks!

Re: Minimum amount of baby clothes

  • I'd have at least 3 sets of pj's in case of accidents in the middle of the night. In the first few months, baby will spend a lot of time swaddled or just wearing Jammies, so save your money for the bigger clothes once he/she is mobile and eating solids and making a mess of him/herself. I'd either go heavy on the onesies or get some good drool bibs because one the teeth start coming in, they become Saint Bernards. And their shirts are always soaked (not so great in the winter when it's cold).

  • Baby will outgrow newborn and 0-3 months very quickly. So you're smart to not go overboard. And zippered footed PJs, onesies, and pants sound perfect. Easy to put on, and comfortable for baby. I'm trying to remember from when our son was a newborn....maybe 7 or so of each - PJs, onesies, and pants. This would be the minimum I would be comfortable with. Babies spit up and have diaper blowouts A LOT when they are newborn. Oh, always make sure you have a change of clothes in the diaper bag. Learn from my mistake lol. First pedi appt, DS was 4 days old and had a major blowout in the waiting room. No extra clothes.

  • Honestly, a week's worth of clothes for each size. I went through DS's baby clothes and was appalled at how much we had. Most of it either sat in the closet or sat in the dirty laundry for weeks on end. The more clothes you have, the more laundry piles up. This time I'm going to stick to a few things I love and donate everything else to those in need.
  • I agree with the week's worth of stuff. You will be constantly washing their clothes in the beginning because of dirty burp clothes, blow outs, spit up, etc. And it's easier with small little loads. I had WAY too many clothes for my son. I went crazy buying outfits because I was just so excited. I ended up donating a ton of clothes, mostly brand new, to a local foster home. Once my son was here, the style I preferred and the type of clothes were totally different. Oh and he was a preemie, so my family/friends went out and bought me all my preemie clothes the day I had him.
Anyways in the beginning you only need jammies, onsies, comfy stretchy pant, beanies and maybe a couple baby hoodies... It will be cold after all and they look so cute in them. Start keeping an eye out at Target, they always put good baby clothes on clearance. And Carters always does 50% off and what not, I would sign up for their emails.
Honestly, I still have a serious problem with buying my son clothes, his wardrobe is way better than mine lol. But you don't need all that in the beginning, plus you just never know what size, what time of year, how long they'll be in it...yada yada, so people waste a lot of money.
  • If this is your first and you plan to have a shower(s), I wouldn't buy any clothes. People bought us SO MANY clothes! My daughter maybe wore everything once.
If you really want to buy clothes, buy like 9month size. We had tons of clothes for 0-6 months then nothing.
  • I'm having two showers but there's so much I want to buy... I guess I better take a chill pill
  • Make sure you buy a pack of newborn sized pjs in the event your baby loses a lot of weight after delivery. My Daughter was in NB pjs for 4 weeks due to feeding issues.
  • I agree with the other women that said a weeks worth of clothes but really it depends on how much laundry you want to do

I agree with the advice not to buy outfits at the beginning. I honestly didn't get a huge kick out of trying to put teeny baby arms in cute outfits until DS was big enough to sit up on his own.

With this one (since it's a jan baby too) we will be doing a lot of pjs, onesies, and pants; like you said. But I am going overboard on the pjs, I'll be buying a weeks worth. We don't have a washer or dryer in the apartment, so it's going to be a pain in the ass to have to wash pjs with two kids because of blow-outs.
But DS lived in pjs his first 2-3 months of life. They're much easier, especially with a winter baby.

  • So I see most people agree, a weeks worth. For a first time mom I have no idea what that means! I assume more than 7 of each thing, I've babysat enough to know that babies often wear more than one outfit a day!

I'm also wondering if you other winter mammas do a onsie under footie pjs? I assume I will, it's cold here and I don't keep my house super warm...

What are you having baby sleep in? I'm thinking footies win a onsie and a halo sleep sack swaddle thing... Thoughts?

I'm having LO sleep in a onsie with a fleece swaddle blanket. We keep our home on the cooler side so this is the warmest option for us.
  • I agree with previous posters on a weeks worth of clothes at least. I would highly recommend buying some gown onsies and zippered onsies vs snap onsies , it makes a world of difference during night time diaper changes.
  • My lo absolutely hates footie pajamas. Luckily, we're in FL and they aren't entirely necessary. He's been sleeping with me so I've had him in a onesie with a warm blanket. He's much happier this way.

  • My baby goes through 3 - 4 outfits a day. We only had like 4 newborn pjs because we thought it was a waste, but she was only 7 lbs at birth and the 0-3 things are too big so we ended up having to get more.
  • I have roughly 8 onesies (all leftover from the toddler) and 15 footie pjs (10 from the toddler and 5 "nicer" ones for going out places).  That's it except for a few hats and swaddles.  I hate baby socks, so I skip the whole pants thing.

  • DH was small and fit into newborn clothes for quite a while. We had probably a dozen pajamas and twice that many onesies. He was born in May and the weather was super warm that year. We didn't use pants really at all. We went out and bought a few newborn things after he was born because everything we had was 0-3 month and too big for a while. It wasn't a big deal though. They really only lasted five or six weeks and then he outgrew them.

We were team green with DS. And I tend to buy pretty gender neutral clothing anyway. So we've saved most everything for this baby. Lucky not to have to buy anything. And the few random gifts from mom/grandma have filled in the gaps.
