Do any of you have asthma? Recently, I feel like mine has gotten significantly worse. I can't tell if it's because of pregnancy or because of all the rain in the area.
Have you found any better ways for treating your asthma than using your inhaler?
I have asthma. I saw an allergy and asthma specialist my whole first pregnancy. My doctor prescribed me a steroid inhaler to use daily throughout my whole 9 months so that I would use my rescue inhaler less. She said both were perfectly safe. Unfortunately I don't have any other alternatives that have worked as well as that.
Yes the rescue one is albuterol. I was nervous that once I got bigger the asthma would get significantly worse but the steroid regulated it pretty well.
I asked about this while TTC and both my primary care and Obgyn docs said the rescue inhaler was fine.
But, they told me the Advair i was taking was not. So, as soon as I found out I was pregnant I stopped taking the Advair. Since, my asthma has gotten worse, though it seems to have leveled off a bit now.
I've read from some women that their docs chose to keep them on Advair because it is MUCH more dangerous for your baby to not get enough oxygen than to be exposed to Advair which has not been proven to cause problems in humans (because there have only been animal tests).
Basically, talk to your doctor. If you need your rescue inhaler, use it. Asthma is no joke.
ETA: I plan to discuss my asthma with my ob when I go in for my first appt.
I have asthma but mine is very mild and I usually don't have to do much for it. I do have am inhaler and have been told by my doctor that it is safe to use if I need it while pregnant. I am worried tho how my asthma will do when I get big. I've heard it can be hard to breath anyways so the asthma factor kinda scares me.
With my first I chose to stop advair because of mixed reviews even though my doc said it was okay. I was terrified of labor because all I could think about was not being able to breathe and push. Everything ended up fine though. With my second I stuck to my fast acting inhaler just in case. I did get some oxygen while in labor and it was helpful. This time I plan to do the same.
Zyrtec, my inhaler when needed which thank God has not been since last fall and also during pregnancy, controlling acid reflux goes a long way towards helping your asthma. The acid reflux will aggravate your asthma which in turn aggravates your acid reflux...its a vicious cycle, so I try to keep the reflux from ever starting.
