Work from home /business owners and newborns at home advice

My husband and I own a business and I run the office for a division of the company from our home. I am the only person that really knows how to use our software and systems for this part of the business. Everyday billing, scheduling, call aheads for service, answering phones and entering production and payments into the system need to be done. My husband and I have been talking about what is going to be our best option when our little one comes in around 6 weeks. I know it's from the home but it's still time consuming (sometimes just a couple of hours a day but sometimes 5-6 hrs) although not truly all day work. Does anyone have any experience with how soon or how much work is realistic with a newborn? He's planning on being around as much as possible the first month or so after she's born but he seems to be ignorant to the fact that she is going to be a lot of work. Lol. And that I will be able to jump back in very soon after. That may be accurate but what have you guys experienced?

  • Have you guys thought about hiring a temporary assistant? The baby is coming during the summer, so you can hire a summer intern or a summer assistant. And if it works out, you can even have him/her stay on so you can do more things with the baby.

  • We have thought about hiring someone, yes, but since it's out of our house I wasn't sure I would love the idea entirely.
I know it will completely depend on our baby's personality and all that but just curious as to if anyone had been in similar situation and how they felt (energy and ability) working so quickly after baby.
  • For the most part your newborn should sleep most of the time so as long as he/she is nearby you should be fine. I work from home as well and I'm more worried about 3+ months when their noisy and know they want your attention when your trying to make phone calls and such! :S

  • I'm self employed and don't work at my house. My dad is my "boss" as its a family business. He's totally delusional about the time a new born consumes and also how much of a toll being a new mother is. I've said firm that I will be out of the office for 8 weeks and even that he seriously struggles with. At one point he assumed I'd take 10-15 days. Like I said...delusional. Try to set boundaries now. Do as much as you can when you can. The baby will sleep a lot but don't forget to take care of yourself. Good luck! If nothing else, know that there are certainly others out there struggling with self employment-new motherhood balance too.
  • I work from home & with my now 3 yr old I never took any time off... I was even working from the hospital. Big mistake! It was totally doable, but now with baby #2 about to make his debut my boss expects the same! She's kind of a Nazi when it comes to labor laws... she doesn't think they apply to her. I'm not sure how it's going to be have a 3 1/2 yr old & a newborn at home while I try to work, but we shall see.

  • @acpm4683 I also work for my dad at a family business. I've made him aware that once I'm back at work, he'll be doing some babysitting while I get stuff done. It was a bit of a reality check for him. Maybe your dad's outlook would benefit from a similar arrangement?
