Bleeding scare

so I was at work today when all of a sudden I felt like my underwear was wet. There was no good reason for it (no coughing and leaking) so I went to check it out. My underwear was full of blood, soaked through my pants and there were clots as well. Needless to say I was scared out of my mind. So I told my boss, called my doctor who told me to head on over to L&D to get checked out. Turned out it wasn't vaginal, just a lot of hemorrhoid blood (which is weird because I hadn't pooped and I've NEVER had clots come out from hemorrhoids before). I'm glad that baby is fine, but it once again makes me feel like I overreacted. I can't ever help but feel like "I'm a nurse, I should know better and know nothing is seriously wrong." But I also don't want to have that reaction and then have it be something really wrong where I should have called.

I know there are other healthcare workers here. Anyone else (really anyone) feel like they're getting really worked up over nothing sometimes? Maybe feel like you're wasting people's time and your money when you do freak out?

  • Yeah I would say you did the right thing!
  • I'm a nurse too and had a similar experience. Though I did have two big vaginal bleeds in my 2nd tri along with spotting throughout my entire 1st tri. About 2ish weeks ago I bled every time I used the bathroom (regardless of what I was doing there). Like bright red, turned the whole toilet bowl red. Turned out to be hemorrhoids as well. I figured it out but my initial reaction after panic was to call the dr. Don't feel bad! I would have done the same thing as you if it had happened that way. Bleeding is scary stuff and you're not wasting anyone's time by checking things out.
  • I just felt I kinda knew in the back of my mind that it was probably just hemorrhoids and I should just get over it and go back to work. I mean, my hemoglobin dropped again, despite taking iron supplements, so I guess it was a significant amount of blood, but still. I hate having to leave work early. Especially when it leaves the unit impossibly staffed
  • This was not an overreaction on your part. No matter what you're profession, bleeding through your garments during pregnancy is a scary thing! Don't be so hard on yourself.

I completely understand that feeling. I had to leave per my docs insistence that same week because my Braxton hicks were practically back to back. I knew I was most likely dehydrated and was over exerting myself at work and reeaaally didn't want to leave... But think how much worse you'd feel if something bad happened and then the thought would be, "I'm a medical professional and should have known better." I checked out fine and also felt guilty like I wasted my time, her time and screwed my coworkers over. Think about what you'd tell someone else, you'd recommend airing on the side of caution. Same applies to you!
  • Thanks @megvaddi . It helps to hear that I'm not a total crazy pants!
  • I would be at the hospital in a flash if that happened to me! Don't be so hard on yourself, I think your doctor would also prefer you to 'overreact' (not that I think you did) than to not react at all! I am amazed a haemorrhoid could even bleed that much...
  • Better to be safe than sorry.  If you had NOT gone to get checked out and something really was wrong, that would probably weigh much heavier on you than missing part of your shift at work.  I'm glad that you and the baby are doing okay!
  • I would have to take extra anxiety meds if that happened to me. You had every right to be concerned. That's very scary!

I'm a nurse, and I would have done the same exact thing. If I saw blood and blood clots, I wouldn't think "let me check where it's coming from" I would think "OMG OMG my baby OMG" and rush to the ER/LD like a frantic lunatic. You did the right thing. Glad you and baby are ok!!!
  • You absolutely did the right thing!  And while I can understand feeling bad about leaving your coworkers short staffed, I guarantee that if they had known what was going on they would have sent you to the doctors themselves.  It's not like you left because you stubbed your toe!  :)

I'm glad everything was OK.  Don't hesitate to take care of you and your baby!

You totally did the right thing. Don't be so hard on yourself. Blood, in any degree, is terrifying during pregnancy.
  • Thanks so much everyone. I'm still a little stressed about the whole episode, but I have an appointment on Monday and I'm sure I'll be getting a few more things to do.
