Newborn Pics?

Okay help me out here, maybe I'm just a super idiot. My child's father plans on having newborn photos taken, and has planned them for two days after my due date, but I told him it will highly depend on how I'm feeling and whether or not I will feel comfortable taking him out that soon. I also told him I was annoyed that he had not consulted me before making these plans, because I will not allow him to just take the baby and go when he is 2 days old. But that's beside the point I suppose.

My question here is, is it normal to schedule like that? I mean who knows when the baby will be born, if he'll even be here 2 days after my due date, etc. How do they usually plan newborn photo sessions?

Just a little confused about that, it really doesn't make sense to me.

I always just let my photographer know when I was due, called once baby was born and finalized the date/time. They want them done within the first 10 days and for me this is part of the cost (photographer needs to be flexible). I don't know if you're doing it in a studio or at your home, that obviously makes a difference as well!

  • My photographer books a tentative date within 10 days of the due date and adjusts when the baby is born. They really like to do them within 10 days because that is when you get the sleepy "mouldable" babies and the best pictures. After 10 days it could be more difficult to tuck them in the cute baskets etc.
  • I think 2 days is definitely too soon! You could still be in the hospital. If you're not, you'll have a pedi appt to go to. You are still working on establishing BFing (if you're doing that). I've always had my babies' pics taken around day 8/9. I also had the photographer come to my house. I never took them anywhere for pictures.

Our photographer is a family friend so she's around often, but she schedules with me just like anyone else. I called her the day DS was born and set a date then, he was 7 days old I believe. I'll do the same this time around. She knows my due date and has made sure to keep her schedule flexible around that time.

  • I asked a friend who specializes in newborns, and she said she won't do them the first week. She said the ideal is 1-3 weeks. What if the baby has jaundice? 2 days is way too soon.
  • With my first born they took them at the hospital through 365 pictures the day we were leaving the hospital. And like pp 2 days after your due date is crazy you never know when you'll go into labor unless you have a planned c section which I'm guessing you don't just talk to him and hope he understands
  • Okay, I just wanted to make sure because that sounded odd to me! 7-10 days is MUCH more reasonable. No, he won't understand, but I already told him no so it doesn't matter. :D
  • I went 10 days overdue with my first (and they had to induce) so planning 2 days after due date is a bad idea on his part, but kudos for him being excited and trying to do something. Agree with pp's. I took my oldest to have pictures at a week old. And my youngest someone came to the hospital to do a few. (And they were unbelievably crappy!) And then I did the others at home. This baby.. I'm just going to do myself as I have more props (not in anyway a professional yet) I looked into having some done.. And the lady wants $450 for a set of 15... That you have to copy offline.. She don't even put them on a disc or anything! Yea I'll work with what I got!
  • I am a newborn photographer and I'm due July 20. Honestly if the photographer actually set a date for your husband she doesn't know what she's doing when it comes to newborns. I always add it to my calendar for 7 days after the due date and have mommy keep me updated as things progress, moving my dates accordingly. My goal is with in 7 days, but I also shoot in your home. Its really best, baby and mommy have everything they could need no need to pack and worry about feedings or fussyness. I don't put a time frame on my sessions either, we do what baby wants when baby wants!
