Pulmonary embolism

Two weeks ago I was diagnosed with a PE in my left lung. For this I must take lovonox twice a day for the rest of pregnancy. I'm scared to death because I'm having a c section to deliver. The warnings in the lovonox pamphlet say epidural and spinal blocks can lead to paralysis. And putting me under is not an option because of the clot. Anyone have experience with this? And please no shaming about why I'm having a c section. It's happened before

Re: Pulmonary embolism

  • I am so sorry to hear that you are facing this health problem! I haven't experienced a PE but you are likely to find decent, general support here. I encourage you to reach out for support in person though. Many hospitals have C-section birth classes and your doctor's office might offer their own birth month clubs - these groups might be able to help with what you are goin through.

I have never heard of c-section shaming but it makes me sad and lol at the same time. We women can be so mean to each other sometimes! In a year or two (and for sure by the time our kids are in school!) we moms are going to be more interested in compatible parenting styles and value judgements than if your baby came out of your V or from surgery. Just before school let out I was sitting around a picnic table discussing birth stories with the other class moms and trust me I wasn't handing my phone number out to mom's for summer play dates based on their ability to have a natural birth.

    Good luck and blessings!

  • Well I can understand your concern, that sounds freaky. I wish I had advice. Poor momma! Has your doctor given you any indication of how big or small the risks are? I feel like they works be much better at giving advice. Best of luck momma!
  • They will prob switch you to heparin at some point closer to delivery. They have a way to stop the effects of heparin if need be during surgery.
  • I am also on Lovenox due to PE's. It's is very scary. I know what you are going through. Talk to your dr. Do research of your own. Lovenox is very safe during pregnancy. They will most likely switch you to heparin at 2 weeks till delivery. It is better for that time frame. Then after you deliver switch back to Lovenox for probably 8-12 weeks after birth. One plus side to all this is that your PE was pregnancy related and not due to other medical conditions. So that means once you are done with being pregnant and recover you won't have to worry about the PE's. Also I have advice on birth control after pregnancy with PE's if you are interested. Send me a message if you have any questions at all. I know what you are going through. I also have advice on how to best do the shots... Let me know :)
  • Did you have symptoms? What were they if you did, and how was it detected. I wanted to know about this?
  • I had 2 Clots in my left lung and 1 in my right. The way it was discovered was like this. I woke up one night with a bad sharp pain on my right side. I thought maybe I ate something bad or just had a bad stomach ache. So I changed positions and went back to sleep. I then woke up a little later with even worse pain and a little short of breath. I tried walking around the house and changing positions but that didn't help. So I had my hubby take me to the ER and they ran some tests. They usually don't think PE's on a young female complaining of abdominal pain, but luckily I had an attentive dr who understood how much pain I was in and also that I couldn't get a deep breath. So they did a contrast scan of my lungs and that's when my clots were discovered. If you have any questions feel free to message me.
  • I had PE a couple years ago. I was not pregnant when diagnosed. It took about 4 months for the doctors to finally diagnose it, and when they did I had multiple PE in my right and left lungs as well as a partially collapsed right lung. I was hospitalized for 7 days and then on blood thinners for over a year. I finally found out that I have a clotting disorder. Therefore...

I have also been on Lovonox since the very beginning of my pregnancy. Trust me, the shots get easier and more manageable. I'm to switch to a different formulation 2x/day at 36 weeks and go back on Lovonox after birth for a minimum of 6 weeks. My doctors have explained to me that this is a very manageable situation and that they will keep a close eye on me. During labor/delivery they've explained that they'll put me on a heparin drip which can be reversed if they needed to.

Keep your chin up, do what is best for you and your baby. Keep open lines of communication with your doctors, making sure to ask every question you can think of. You're going to do great!
