Breastfeeding Supply Issues

So I'm a first time mom and I'm breastfeeding my daughter (currently eight weeks old). She has been primarily breastfed since day one, except I've discovered she needs some formula at night to hold her over until morning and this has helped her to sleep 7-9 hours. However I've recently discovered an I sense decrease in my milk production. I was producing about 4 ounces per breast every 4-6 hours. Now I'm lucky to fill after 10 hours. The only things I've changed are i began pumping more regularly (which I thought would increase supply) and I started my period (more of a light spotting). The day my milk stopped my period came. Is this likely the cause? Has anyone experienced this? Any recommendations. I'm going back to work in 5 weeks so I've begun pumping so baby and I are both used to it.

  • I hate to break it to you, but I think the supplementing at night is the problem. Google breastfeeding & return of period. It will bring up a hit to kellymom.com. This explains really well how cutting a nursing session abruptly can lead to the return of your period. You may see a rebound in supply when your period is over, but going so long between nursing sessions can have a major impact this early on. I speak from experience. My first DD started sleeping through the night very early on and quickly progressed to sleeping for 12 hours at night (horrible day napper though!). I was EP'ing and went with the philosophy of pump when the baby eats, so I wasn't pumping for 12 hours either. This caused a huge drop in supply & it was very hard to build it back up.

I don't think she needs the formula at night, but rather needs nursing sessions throughout the night. It is normal for a baby that young to still wake 2-3 times per night to eat.

    Good luck!

  • I had to reword this to some other moms too... But I also found an article that help. The formula wasn't given to her go make her slee longer... She slept that long anyways. It just helped her to fall asleep. She would stay up for hours screaming and trying to eat but would let go so I thought I wasn't producing enough for her.
  • I would stop giving formula and try some supplements like More Milk Plus, mothers tea, or fenugreek to increase supply if you think supply is an issue. Going that long has definitely had an impact. If she sleeps through the night, wake up at least once while she's sleep and pump.

I think peanut butter was the tastiest. These worked wonders and with the increase I started pumping once at night during baby's long stretch of sleep.
