I am a little worried about the clothes that I have purchased and washed---I have a lot of newborn clothes but found out he might be a little closer to 9 lbs!! My question is how big was your LO and what size did he or she wear?
Mine was born 6-12 and is still wearing newborn at 7-3. He is just about out of them, though. We were told he'd be around 8.5 pounds when he was born, but they were way off! You never know, you may still need them for awhile!
My boys were 6 lbs and 6 lbs 6 oz and wore newborn for 7 weeks. Everyone is saying that it's different with a singleton so most of the clothes are 3 months. They will lose weight after birth.
My first was born 8lbs 9oz 21.5" and by the time we left the hospital it seemed the carter's NB longsleeve onesie was too tight on the arms. The NB pjs lasted a bit longer- into the 2nd week? I went with 0-3 onesies and pants this time around.
Our son was 8 pounds 11 ounces. We exchanged all his newborn clothes for 0-3 months. It's big on him but at least he can wear each outfit multiple times.
LO was born 7-5, 7lb for now and I bet we will get about another 2-3 weeks out of NB clothes because they fit her really well right now. To be honest I really probably won't dress her too much other than maybe a plain onesie unless we're leaving the house bc I'll keep her swaddled. I had her in a onesie, pants and hat (all lightweight) yesterday and she was getting sweaty.

Sorry for the poor man's siggy...ticker won't load regardless of how many tips I read.
My daughter was 7 lbs 1 oz when she was born (She was A LOT smaller than we anticipated) and didn't have any newborn clothes. She will be 1 month tomorrow and she's still in newborn clothes and newborn diapers. She probably has another week or two in this size before she graduates to 0-3 month and size 1 diapers completely.
My LO was 5lb 3oz and newborn clothes are still too big for him. Unfortunately preemie clothes are too small so he's kind of stuck in between sizes lol. But for now he's just wearing the slightly larger newborn onesies.
I figured that there was a good chance that newborn clothes either wouldn't fit or would only be needed for a very short period of time, so I focused on 0-3 and up. In fact I think the only newborn clothes I have are ones that my mum bought. I figure that we can always buy more clothes if we need to. I'm already 1 day overdue with no definite signs of labour, and my sister just had a 10lb3oz baby who is already much too big for newborn clothes, so I think it's probably a smart decision.
My little guy was 4-9 so he wore preemie for awhile then newborn for 6 weeks. We got a little of both this time around and only removed tags from a few items until we know.
Dd was 7.1 when she was born. She weighs 7.7 now at 11 days and is wearing newborn clothes. Don't listen too much into the estimation of weight, they can be off. They told me at 36 that she was over 6 lbs, so I was expecting an 8 lb baby at birth and she was barely 7.
I think it's def depends on the brand.. All of the "koala kids" from babies r us must run small... After drying them, the newborn size look preemie, doubt he will ever wear them :-<
7.3 at birth, 8.4 at 6 day checkup, newborn barely fits now at 10 days and 0-3 works well even though its a little baggy. His length more than anything is what makes the newborn too small. My first was a skinny, long baby born at 6.12, newborn was baggy at first and he was in it for at least 4-5 weeks. Everyone is giving me gifts of newborn clothing that are already too small!
Child of Mine is my favorite brand so far, just because they fit my >6 lb the best. 2 weeks on Sunday and she's still in NB. I'll update weight on Monday.
This entire thread is why I'm glad literally ALL except 2 clothing items were purchased secondhand. And also that in the grand scheme of things I still don't have that many clothes, really.
@mellymar I really don't have many clothes either and feel like it's too much. Like a 5 pack of onesies is half a week of clothes (even with changes). Today I was like wait I have 2 weeks worth of newborn clothes she probably will only wear each once and was so sad..

Yeah I bought clothes while yard sailing yesterday (I made sure to buy all different sizes nb - 9m) but I think today unless I see something really cute I'm going to try to focus on getting stuff like blankets or finding something interesting furniture wise. I'm now honestly kind of glad I don't have many clothes
I left the tags on all clothes (garbage bag full!) from my shower so I can return or exchange as needed, and even so I still have more than enough clothing either given to me second hand or without tags (or that I bought early on). I'm looking forward to a big fat store credit at babies r us when I haul in all those extra clothes.
How much you need depends so much on the baby. My first had reflux and we literally went through 4-5 outfits a day. So I do have a lot of clothing but with this kid I can often use the same clothes 2 days in a row. I agree on skipping new clothes. Yard sales and Goodwill 1/2 price kids day are my go to sources. My kids are still fashionably dressed.
I thought we wouldn't need barely any newborn clothes as we were convinced my son would be a big baby. He was 5lbs 12oz (granted 5 weeks early). We had to go out and buy more newborn clothes as we didn't have enough. He's coming up on 5 weeks and seems like he'll still be in NB for another month or so as 0-3 looks huge for him. Consignment/thrift stores/hand me downs are my go to places for buying him clothes. He goes through at least 2-3 outfits a day from spit up to diaper leakage so we've stocked up on clothes to prevent laundry from happening every day. He's worn every article of clothing at least 3x now.
Carters newborn only go up to 8 pounds so I only bought 0-3 months in that. I do know that the Kissy Kissy brand runs small just from what people have told me.
