C section & hospital bag

so I am 90% sure I will be getting a c section. I wanted a vaginal birth but there's many complications going on with my pregnancy and I am type one diabetic.

Anyways, I was just wondering for those of you who have had a c section or are having a c section do you recommend packing anything different from a "normal" hospital bag? :) I love how there is so much support on here. Thanks.

Re: C section & hospital bag

  • I personally didn't pack anything different. Just make sure, if you aren't wearing the hospital gowns with the bet underwear, that you being extremely loose bottoms and undies :-)

  • Don't wear anything restricting. So maxi skirts and dresses...you might also stay in the hospital longer, so I would pack for comfort. Bring things where you will be comfortable :)
  • Thank you guys :)
  • C sections do mean longer stays so pack extra pump supplies or insulin. Don't count on them having the insulin you use. (I had to have DH bring me my own with my first bc they didn't have my insulin).
  • Take as many of the mesh panties home with you from the hospital as you can. I am going to have my second cs on July 8th. I haven't packed anything different except extra clothes for the longer stay. This time around I'm also taking two bags (one for me and a diaper bag). You will want to stock up on all the free diapers, pads and panties you can.

  • I lived in the hospital gown & mesh panties post c/s -- so, no, I wouldn't change anything except what you'd burn through in 1-2 days, since you're likely to be there for four days. Mainly, for me, that just means more snacks for the MOTN feelings. ;)

I stayed in the gown too, so much easier and they check the incision daily so it's easier for that too. Take colace or some other stool softener in case they don't give you any (my hospital didn't), the pain meds will back you up. I had DH go home and grab my pillow for comfort and used the hospital pillows to support the incision site. Other than that, nothing different! I was there for 4 days, 3 nights total.

I used a belly band under my clothes because all of my underwear and pants waistbands sat right on my incision. It helped protect it because it hurt like hell for the elastic to put pressure on it or rub against it. Even loose pants and sweats, everything just sits right there. I'm not sure if I'll be having another csection but I'll bring my belly bands just in case. Other than that maybe one/two more days worth of clothing incase you end up with a longer stay because of the csection.

I Don't think I would bring anything different if I was having another c-section, other than loose shoes or sandles. I was so swollen after my c-section, that I didn't fit any shoes I had, nor my husbands. I left the hospital in socks. We stopped on the way home and I got a size 11 (normally a 8.5 shoe size) to wear and they were still tight. Like pps have said, a dress or pants that do not rest where the incision will be.

Tmi here, constipation can get bad. When you are home, laxitives will help, as will worse case scenario, disposable gloves (like the ones drs use).
  • I wonder the same thing as this is a scheduled c section for me and my last one wasn't.. Only thing I noticed different was that I could use my own pads instead of the hospital ones (after the first day, only because you won't be getting up the first day at all.) oh and bar soap such as dial. Unscented. So luxury body wash is a no no. Hm... I think that's about it.
  • Oh and shoes you can just slip on when going home. Because you do not want to be bending over and tying anything.. And loose pants.. Lol
  • I just had one on 5/31 as my little guy came 5 weeks early unexpectedly. The only thing I used that I packed was Chapstick and I brought my own towels and shampoo and soap. It felt really good to take a shower and wash my hair and was very thankful to have my iwn towels and soaps. I didn't use any of the clothes I brought including underwear and pads. I just used the stuff the hospital provided, it was easy and not bad at all! I also just stayed in the gowns they gave me to wear as they were very comfy, covered well and easy access to breastfeed. We were in the hospital for 5 days and the nurses were great, they brought us anything we needed for me or the baby. Don't bring anything for the baby except an outfit to wear home!
  • I just found a nice set that was button down too and had very loose pants at Walmart. I know walmart but they could get ruined very easily so don't spend much in clothes if you decide to get something different.

I found the mesh panties itchy and they bothered my cut. So I had my mom run out and buy 1 pack of Grandmom panties. Seriously they went to my belly button and worked great with huge pads.
