LO measuring small/Pediatrician

Hi ladies,

So here's my history:
I got pregnant at 17 months post-op for RNY Gastric Bypass. MoFst doctors recommend that you wait at least 18 months prior to surgery to get pregnant, mine recommending two years, just to be safe. However, the doctor said that my weight loss had leveled off and I should be safe to carry the pregnancy.

At 12 weeks, my LO was measuring 11 weeks 4 days.
At 18 weeks, he was measuring about 17 weeks.
At 23 weeks, he was in the 14th %tile and now at 27 weeks he is measuring in the 12th %tile... He was only about a pound and a quarter at yesterday's appointment, when average is about 2lbs.

I'm wondering if I got my last period wrong! I eat like crazy, take my vitamins and I've gained 17lbs...

The doctor is not concerned, yet, however now I am upped to Bi-weekly growth scans for the remainder of the pregnancy. Everything is precautionary measures at this point... Still a little scary, however!

Have any of you experienced this? I was 6lbs 5oz at birth and my brother was 6lbs 14oz. The women in my family just seem to not have large babies.

Any insight or experience would be helpful! I'm remaining positive now, because they did a Doppler on the umbilical cord and the doc said that's fine... He's made no mention of any other complications, aside from his size.

Also, has anyone picked a pediatrician?? They asked me at my appointment yesterday and I was taken aback! Didn't realize it was time for that yet!

  • 1- ultra sounds are a guestimate.
2- if they were really worried you'd have been on bi weekly before this point.
3- you're gaining, baby is growing and if they need to give you meds then they will. Chin up momma. It's hard, but you'll both be ok

  • I agree with PP, ultrasounds are just an estimated guess. Also, there has to be some babies measuring large and some small to even have some sort of ratio.

  • It's only a concern when the baby gets under the 10th percentile. I think even 10% is still okay. So they are probably just monitoring you a little closer to make sure you don't fall under that percentage. In saying that, my baby did fall under that at 7% and now to 1%. I was sent to a specialist that same day and I have weekly ultrasounds and dr appts. It will move up to twice a week ultrasounds and once a week fetal non-stress tests in a couple of weeks. Everything is still just fine but they now have to monitor my baby very close and as soon as they see a problem or that she completely stops growing they will put me in the hospital and probably take her out early. Just so you are aware, they won't check growth until at least 3 weeks in between. Reason being, 3 weeks is the minimum time to let the baby grow and get an accurate measurement of any growth. Even if you have ultrasounds more frequent than that like I do, they will just be looking at blood flow and watch the baby's movement for awhile. But everything should be just fine!
  • Agree with all above and just curious, do you have any nutritional deficits or malabsorption problems due to having a gastric bypass? If that's a possibility could there be a tie-in to a smaller measuring baby? Just a thought, glad you're being monitored closely and good luck!
  • JayKaygill - The doctor actually gave me that run down the other day. They say if it gets to that point, the babies are better out than in! Best of luck to you, hun!

slp213psu Well gastric bypass does come with some mal-absorption.. But I supplement with vitamins and additional protein... In the long run, it could have everything to do with my gastric bypass, but there are no studies that prove people with a history of gastric bypass have smaller babies. In most cases, the babies get everything they need... Then again... this is based off what I've read online.

In the long run, there are so many factors that I'm just trying to go with the flow. He's kicking away right now and that puts a smile on my face.
